The Yas Marina racetrack in Abu Dhabi is hosting the closing event of the 2011 GP2 Series. The non-points exhibition round started today with the running of practice and qualifying, which set the starting grid for race 1.
Julian Leal will start in 19th place while Stéphane Richelmi ended up not too far away from him in 21st. Leal paid an high price for an off-track at the start of practice and was prevented to complete the work that was scheduled for him. As a consequence, he had to make up the lost ground in qualifying…
In addition to that, qualifying was red-flagged with four minutes to go because an off-track exit that forced race control to stop the action. As a consequence, huge traffic made any attempt to improve laptimes worthless.
The first race of the weekend, set on a 31-lap distance, will take-off tomorrow at 11:00 local time (9 AM European time), while race 2 is scheduled, on a 22-lap distance, for Sunday at 13:30 local time (10:30 AM European Time).
Julian Leal, 19. (1:50.374)
“My day has been largely jeopardized by an off-track exit that virtually ended my practice run after just a few minutes. I started qualifying without many references and in the end, all considered, I wasn't really dissatisfied with how it went"
Stéphane Richelmi 21. (1:50.600)
“This qualifying session hasn't been easy at all. With the first set of tires I faced a slowing down car and I lost the chance to clock a good laptime in the last few corners. Then with the second set there was an awful lot of traffic on-track, and I just couldn't complete a whole clean lap. I hope for better luck on race day because this is a track that offers many passing opportunities."
