Atena 3 gets Spanish Formula One rights

Atena 3 has secured the free-to-air rights to Formula One in Spain for the next two years.

The commercial broadcaster has stepped in after the collapse of La Sexta's deal with rights holder Mediapro, which had been set to run until 2013. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Antena 3 will pay around €40 million (US$53 million) a season for the rights, a similar fee to that agreed with La Sexta.

Reports in Spain also indicate that Telecinco had been interested in the rights, but withdrew citing a lack of transparency resulting from the ongoing merger between Antena 3 and La Sexta.
