Long time V8 Ute driver, Craig Dontas, will be joined by identical twin brother Troy when he takes to the grid for Round 1 of the 2012 Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series - protected by Armor All at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide 1 - 4 March.
Troy will line up with the Big Gun Racing team, who also look after Peter Burnitt, Ryal Harris and Brad Patton, and will be driving David Sieder's former BF Ford, the winning Ute from last year's Clipsal 500 round.
"Oh no, I didn't think about that (driving the Clipsal winning Ford) - that puts a whole lot more pressure on me now. I hope I don't bring it in last, he said with a grin. My goal is to finish all races with a clean nose, be competitive and see where I'm at on Sunday."
Troy's prior racing history consists of driving in the South Australian State MGF series for the last three years, where he placed 10th in 2009, 6th in 2010 and moved up to finish second last year.
"I've followed Craig around to a few of the Rounds, so it will be good to finally race myself. We have only raced against each other once before in the MGF series. I poled it, however got a bit excited and threw myself off the track. Craig came in 3rd and I came in 5th, I guess you could say he beat me then but I had an excuse ...I was crook when I raced," he said with a smirk.
Craig, who is older by a couple of minutes, has taken on the role of mentoring his younger brother who hasn't had much experience in a Ute.
"I've raced at a hand full of track days, in the passenger seat and driver's seat, had mentoring from Craig and Gary Baxter and will obviously be testing with Big Gun Racing before Clipsal. Craig has been great with helping me get a drive, I don't usually compliment him, but I'm really thankful for all of his efforts. I'd love to drive in the Series full-time, I'm just going to start with Round 1 and see how things pan out," explained Troy.
Craig has been in the Series since 2006, celebrating his 100th Race in 2010 and has had great support from Thirsty Camel Bottle shops. He also raced with Big Gun Racing when he began in his early years and started off in a Ford, however was happy to make the move to the Holden in 2010.
"Troy's actually driving the Ford that I started off in with Big Gun Racing. They are like a family to me, and I know they will look after him. "I definitely want to beat him on the track. That will be one of my main priorities, but I'll also be looking out for him. I'll definitely be giving him advice over the weekend and try and keep him out of trouble. Clipsal's a big track to start on but I'm sure he'll be ok," said Craig.
The Dontas brothers will hit the track on Thursday, 1 March for two practice sessions and Qualifying and will come head to head for Race 1 on Friday, 2nd March at 3:05pm.
Race 2 is on Saturday at 9:30am and will be televised LIVE as on Network Seven along with Race 3 that will also be televised live as on Sunday, 4 March at 1:10pm.
The 2012 Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series - protected by Armor All features 32 Ford and Holden production based V8 racing utes - covering 8 championship rounds, and 24 races through five states of Australia.
