Uhrhane last minute deal with Double R
Australian single-seater ace Geoff Uhrhane is to graduate to the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series this year with Double R Racing, the 20-year-old having agreed an eleventh hour deal with Woking team less than a week before the start of the 2012 season. As a double race winner and multiple podium finisher in the 2011 Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain, and a Formula Ford EuroCup race winner at Spa-Francorchamps, the Queensland native marked himself out as one of Australia’s brightest young prospects last year.Moving into the Certina Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship for the final two rounds of its 2011 campaign at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit, Uhrhane then contested the six-round ‘Finals Series’ last November. For his first season in F3, the Gold Coast racer will pilot a brand new Mercedes-powered Dallara F312 which Double R is taking delivery of this week. Unsurprisingly, team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt is absolutely delighted to have secured Uhrhane’s signature for 2012.“Everything’s happened very quickly – we’re delighted to have agreed a deal with Geoff, he’s a very talented young driver and a fantastic prospect”, said Hieatt, “Missing all of the pre-season testing isn’t ideal and he will have his work cut-out to get to grips with the F312 at Oulton. Having said that, we’re sure Geoff is going to be a strong force in the championship as the year progresses.” Having missed the entirety of official British F3 pre-season testing, Uhrhane faces a monumental challenge at Oulton Park International Circuit this coming weekend when the season gets underway with the first three races of the year on Saturday, 7th April.Double R is planning to run the Australian in his new Dallara at Pembrey in Wales before heading up to Cheshire for the season curtain-raiser. Other than that, Uhrhane’s only other chance to obtain practice mileage will be during a brief 55-minute session at Oulton Park on Good Friday, 6th April.“It’s all been a bit of a rush, I took too long to make my mind up of where to race this year but we talked with Boyo and got a deal sorted out so I’m really happy about that”, said Uhrhane, “I’ve only had a couple of test days in a Euro F3 Open car, they went well, and hopefully we’re going to have a run at Pembrey before going to Oulton.“It’s going to be really hard for the first couple of weekends until I get some decent testing and mileage under my belt. I’m sure we’ll start moving forward pretty quickly after that though, plus F3 is a two-year plan anyway.”With Uhrhane’s arrival at Double R, the team’s line-up has been bolstered to three cars with Fahmi Ilyas to contest the headline International Class in a sister Mercedes-engined Dallara F312 while Duvashen Padayachee will race a Mugen-Honda powered Dallara F308 in the National Class.Qualifying for the first three rounds of the 2012 Cooper Tires British F3 International Series will take place at 14.15 on Good Friday with all racing set to follow on Saturday, 7th April, at 09.55, 13.45 and 17.00 respectively.
