Liuzzi and Pigoli share Superstars wins in Monza

A record-high 31.000 fans welcomed the SUPERSTARS SERIES teams and drivers at Monza, in the first round of the 2012 season for the FG GROUP-promoted championships. In front of a stunning crowd, Max Pigoli came out of the weekend with a solid lead in standings as he shared wins with Formula One star Vitantonio Liuzzi.

After having cruised to pole in Qualifying, Pigoli brought Jaguar their first win with the XFR model in Race 1, while Liuzzi cruised to the lead early and kept control in the closing stages of Race 2 for a phenomenal maiden win. Including his CAAL Racing-prepared Mercedes C63 AMG, five different car brands were covered by the firs five positions with Francesco Sini (Chevrolet Lumina CR8), Thomas Biagi (BMW M3 E92) and Gianni Morbidelli (Audi RS5) rounding out the top-5. The Pesaro-based racer enjoyed a good debut with the brand-new Audi RS5, despite suffering from fuel pressure issues while battling for the lead in Race 2.

Andrea Larini also made his way to the leading pack at his SUPERSTARS debut. He lined-up on another Mercedes C63 AMG, fielded by Team Romeo Ferraris, and took 2nd place in Race 1. Swedish youngster Johan Kristoffersson was the best rookie of the morning race aboard the Audi Sport KMS RS5, ending up with a 5th place overall, while 17-year-old Andrea Boffo left a strong impression in the afternoon one.

His team-mate Nico Caldarola, who stared on pole in Race 2, brought home a positive 6th-place finish. Former Ferrari F.1 driver Mika Salo, who was at his debut too with Maserati, had a pretty troubled Race Day with a 6th place and a DNF on his toll.  In the INTERNATIONAL GTSPRINT SERIES, Black Team started their season with a bang. Experienced Raffaele Giammaria cruised to win in Race 1 aboard his reliable Ferrari F430 GTS2, while the brand-new Ferrari 458 Italia went from flag to flag in Race 2 in the hands of Andrea Palma.

Porsche hit the podium twice thanks to Glauco Solieri and the Autorlando 997 GTS2, while 27-year-old rookie Simone Pellegrinelli, sharing his ride with Giammaria, finished in third on Race 2. In GTS Open, Ukrainian Alexandr Gayday rounded out a great weekend with two class wins and a double fourth place overall. The GTS Cup Trophy honors were shared by Colombian Steven Goldstein, on the Mik Corse Lamborghini Gallardo, and Gianfranco Bocellari, who won Race 2 aboard a Kessel-prepared Ferrari 430.

The next round for SUPERSTARS and GTSPRINT will be in just three weeks at Autodromo Enzo and Dino Ferrari, in Imola.
