SCOTS INVITED TO GET INVOLVED WITH FAMOUS CAR RALLY .
The organisers of the Scottish Malts, the car rally that attracts drivers and their cars from all over the world, are inviting everyone along the 1000 mile route through Scotland to get involved and come out to see the cars.
More than 40 classic cars are taking part this year ranging from the very first right hand drive production Jaguar E-Type Fixed Head Coupe, supplied by Jaguar Cars in August 1961, to a 1930 Riley Brooklands 9HP and two Jaguar SS100.
“We have attracted some amazing cars from all over the world to take part in this event,” said Tomas de Vargas Machuca, Managing Director of the Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation, HERO, alongside Patrick Burke, “and we want to make sure that as many people in Scotland see them and enjoy them as possible.”
“Not only are we publishing the main stopping points on our route but we really want people to come along, see the cars, meet the drivers and enjoy the spectacle, there are some amazing cars which will interest everyone.”
The event starts at the Turnberry Hotel in Ayrshire on Sunday April 29th when the public are invited to go along and see the cars arriving between 11.30am in the morning until 4.30pm in the afternoon.
The cars will be started the following morning by Norman Dewis, Jaguar’s famous test driver who drove with Stirling Moss in the 1953 Mille Miglia and was responsible for developing the first disc brakes which were fitted to a Jaguar C Type that took part in the 1953 race. Norman will be travelling back to Italy in May with Sir Stirling Moss to celebrate that famous event.
HERO are also inviting the Scottish public to take pictures of the cars and email them to the organisers as part of a major photographic competition split into two classes< children and young people up to the age of 18, and adults.
The winners will receive specially engraved cups and other goodies just as the drivers of the event do.
Patrick Burke added: “These cars are part of our motoring history and heritage not everyone can take part but they can come along and get involved. We also hope that teachers will feel that the cars are part of our social and engineering history and that pupils might be given a few minutes to see the cars go through their local area.”
Tomas and his team at HERO are encouraging people to go to the HERO website (heroevents.eu/) where updates will be given every day and where a full list of the cars can be seen and downloaded.
The event will come to a well deserved rest back at the Turnberry on the 4th May where the public will get a further chance to see the cars and take pictures for the competition.
Lord Steel of Aikwood (the Honorary HERO Club President) will be present at the Prize Giving Dinner where the drivers are not the only ones to receive a prize, but so too will the Trial winning car that will be parked in the dining room alongside the guests.
HERO’s Arrive & Drive (classic cars available for hire from HERO) present at the event include an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce, Porsche 911 2L T SWB (the restoration of which has recently been completed and the car officially added to the fleet in Feb at Race Retro), a Jaguar XK150, a Triumph TR4 and a Triumph TR6.
The event is sponsored by EFG Private Bank, Octane, Hagerty Classic Car Insurance and AVIS (official support vehicle partner of HERO) and the Turnberry Hotel (home of the British golf Open and a HERO Partner).
The event is the first qualifying round of the much coveted HERO Cup. The club's annual championship which sees the crew that participates in all but one of the HERO Events for 2012, scoring the lowest number of penalties, win a week on board the 95 ft. S/Y Orianda cruising in the Mediterranean
