jam packed with 25 races
Castle Combe Circuit saw one of the busiest race meetings of the season so far when over 450 cars took on the historic race circuit in an Anglo-Japanese themed weekend jam packed with 25 races.
Add in the variables of the less than summery weather and the race meeting ran right through to the curfew for both events with the Circuit only just getting through all the races scheduled in the time allowed.
Adrian Fawdington, Director of Castle Combe Racing Club confirmed: “It was certainly an action packed weekend with the weather playing a very strong part in a number of the races. We had full grids for the majority of the meeting and, when you’ve got 40 cars out on the circuit, whistling winds and the rain coming not only from above but also from below and the sides, you’re testing not only the skills of the drivers but also of the marshals as we had to keep racing on schedule whilst still retaining the safety of everyone out on the course.
“As you would imagine we had a number of cars who lost it on the corners and ended up in the grass. This all adds to the excitement for spectators though and although we experienced a few very minor injuries, it was generally not much more than a bit of dented pride and the odd dented front bumper.”
“The Circuit runs a curfew for all race meetings and we took it to the wire for both days. We allow this extra time for out of the ordinary variables although I can’t remember the last time that we took it to the very last minute, let alone on both race days!”
This is the second year that Castle Combe Circuit has run an Anglo-Japanese themed race meeting weekend. The Saturday had a ‘Lotus theme’ with three races for the famous marquee taking much of the attention whilst Sunday saw large numbers of Mazda, championship races for the Toyota MR2 and the circuit’s home championship for Saloons, single seaters and Sports & GTs.
The next race meeting is Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July 2012 with the Castle Combe Classic Sports Car Race Weekend. Capture the spirit of the Swinging 60s and 70s with period marques including Sunbeam, Porsche, BMW, MGs, Corvettes, Jaguars and Mustangs taking on the historic circuit.
In the interim, the Circuit also welcomes the Classic and Sports Car Action Day on Saturday 30th June when non race drivers can get out on the circuit to have-a-go. Add in the classic car parade laps, owner’s club displays, a trade area including the Homemaker Vintage and Flea market and you’ve got an event for all classic and sports car enthusiasts.
