Plant back on form with Team Parker Racing

Richard Plant was the star of the weekend for Team Parker Racing in the latest round of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone thanks to a charging drive to second place.Yorkshireman Plant was the best qualifier from the Parker squad, but lost out to team-mate Andy Meyrick at the start of the first race. Cheshire racer Meyrick fended off Plant in a very close battle to score a fifth place, with Sam Tordoff in turn close behind in seventh.Tordoff had lost out in an all-Team Parker Racing battle with fellow Yorkshireman Daniel Lloyd early in the race, but Lloyds challenge ended with left-rear suspension failure. In the second race, Plant ran fifth before moving up to fourth when James Sutton retired. He then chiselled his way past Jonas Gelzinis in an excellent manoeuvre with four laps remaining to take third. Plant ran out of time to catch second-placed Rory Butcher, but it didnt matter as the Scot was penalised five seconds for exceeding track limits.Weve had an up-and-down year and that result is exactly what I needed, said Plant, who had been out of luck since winning a race at the opening round.Butchers penalty also promoted Tordoff and Meyrick to fifth and sixth respectively. The two ran in very close formation for the entire race, with Tordoff narrowly missing out on grabbing fourth from Ben Barker.Lloyd ran on the tail of his team-mates, but he also earned a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits, dropping him to ninth. The results keep Tordoff third in the championship, well in the hunt in the four-way battle for the runner-up spot with one round remaining. It also means Team Parker Racing retains second in the teams championship, with an outside shot at the title.Team principal Stuart Parker said: Planty has had a really tough run, but he came here this weekend and did a fantastic job from start to finish. He raced so well in that second raceits probably his best racing performance weve seen in Carrera Cup, and Im absolutely over the moon for him. He seems to be back on form again, and thats great going into the final round. For some reason we just didnt seem to hit the sweet spot with the cars in qualifying. With the top nine covered by less than half a second, thats critical around here and it made the races difficult for us. The problem on the Silverstone National Circuit is that its such a short, technical lap that you cant really gain an advantage anywhere, and that means its not the easiest circuit to pass on.Andy keeps making progress and going forward, but because he only joined the series in the middle of this season hes still lacking experience in the cars. He came good by the end of the weekend, but at Silverstone its all about qualifying.Sam had a fantastic second race. To be fair to him, he lost time in testing on Friday with a broken damper, and that put him on the back foot for qualifying.Dans actually had a strong weekend. Hes had Rob Bell coaching and his technique is improving all the time. Its just a shame about the problem in race one because he deserved a lot better.PIERCE TAKES DOUBLE PRO-AM1 PODIUM

Derek Pierce was again the teams only representative in the pro-am1 class, and the JD Pierce with Team Parker driver scored two strong podium finishes. The Scot made his customary brilliant start to race one and led for 16 of the 28 laps before class rival Ahmad Al Harthy got past him. He kept the pressure on Al Harthy all the way to finish just half a second down in second place. In race two, Pierce ran second before getting passed by Oly Mortimer with 10 laps to go and racing to third in class. The results mean Pierce remains in the hunt for second in the pro-am1 title chase with one round to go.Team principal Stuart Parker said: Derek had two solid races. He did extremely well in the first race, and only lost the lead due to a small mistake. For some reason he didnt quite have so much pace in race two but it was more good points.SHERWOOD WINS GT3 CUP ROUND

Team Parker Racing was also at full strength in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, which joined the BTCC support bill for the first time at Silverstone. The Leicestershire teams local man Justin Sherwood took an excellent win in Saturdays race as he continues his strong return after a long layoff from racing, while team-mate Steven Liquorish claimed sixth position after a 10-second penalty for a false start.Under the gaze of live ITV4 cameras on Sunday, Liquorish led from the start but dropped back with an incident at Becketts. Meanwhile, Sherwood held second but contact with a lapped car dropped him back.Liquorish recovered as high as second before dropping back to fourth, one place ahead of the recovering Sherwood, although Liquorishs result confirmed him in second place in the championship. As part of the ultra-popular British Touring Car Championship package, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge enjoyed live coverage from the second race at Silverstone on ITV4 and ITV4 HD, and was streamed live at itv.com/touringcars. The final round is on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit on October 20/21.
