Tiago Monteiro qualifies 5th and 6th at Spa WTCC

his weekend, Tiago is meeting the challenge of Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, for the 7th round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, WTCC. The Portuguese driver faces a double challenge as he will lose 5 places on the starting grid for race one and because of this handicap, Tiago and his Honda team decided to focus on the second race in this afternoon's qualifying.

Tiago was targeting on a 10th place finish which, thanks to the reverse grid rule, would be transformed into pole position for race two. However, the Honda Civic # 18 driver proved to be faster than expected and he secured the sixth fastest time instead. As a result he will start from 11th place on the grid for the first race, followed by the third row start for the second.

The result is not what Tiago had hoped for, however even though he knows it will be a difficult task to reach the podium, he hasn't given up all hope.

"We did not get the result we expected, but we knew that it would be risky. I thought I was fighting for 10th place, but it ended up being for 6th instead," said Tiago.

"We are a fair way from the podium, but all is not completely lost if I get off to a good start. The important thing is to score points. I will fight because I have nothing to lose."

The races at Spa-Francorchamps will be broadcasted live on Eurosport, Sunday June 22nd at 11:30 and 12:30.
