Gerhard Berger's nephew, Lucas Auer aims for Formula 1

Lucas Auer had big plans for his home race in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. On the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, the Austrian was determined to fight his way up the order in the overall classification and underlined this with a podium finish. Esteban Ocon continues to top the points’ table, but was plagued by bad luck on the Red Bull Ring. Spectators were treated to gripping duels and action-packed racing, not least thanks to the strong performance of Hankook’s race tyres.

Although Lucas Auer has experienced a season of mixed fortunes by now, the 19 year old underlined what he is capable of this weekend. “We were simply too slow, but we worked really hard over the last few weeks and we’ve made great progress. That’s a huge relief,” concluded the nephew of ex-Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger. Auer is eager to make the leap into the sport’s supreme class. But the young hotshot doesn’t just count on his uncle’s tips: “Of course I seek his advice whenever I can because he’s so experienced. But as soon as I climb into the car I have to do my own thing and focus completely on myself,” he explains.
