George Grant’s MaX5 Racing Championship campaign reached new heights at Snetterton last weekend (August 30) as his efforts to raise awareness for official Armed Forces charity Mission Motorsport resumed at round six.Grant – making his competitive debut at the Norfolk venue – was denied valuable track time on Friday following clutch problems, though he still managed to qualify 19th of 23 runners despite limited running.However, this did little to hold him back as he charged up to 15th in race one, although it could have been even better if not for light contact with Graeme McMurchie.“The Mission Motorsport guys worked extremely hard to prepare the car following problems in testing, so I owe them a big thank you,” explained Grant. “Considering I wasn’t in the groove, qualifying went about as well as we could have expected, even though I was a little tentative.”Pre-season experience of Snetterton, coupled with minor tweaks to the Mk3 MX-5, enabled Grant to fully attack the 2.969 -mile circuit in Saturday’s second contest.Following another great getaway, Grant was in the thick of a prolonged midfield battle, passing Mk1 drivers McMurchie and Rob Chilcott, before a couple of last-lap mistakes robbed him of a career-best 13th, forcing the GGR Motorsport driver to settle for 15th once again.Despite losing positions in the closing stages, George was delighted with unarguably his best weekend of 2014, which also keeps him seventh in the Mk3 standings.And although recent tyre struggles have also hindered Grant’s progress this season, he appears to be getting on top of the issue notwithstanding further problems towards the end of Saturday’s final battle.“I made another fantastic start at the beginning of race two,” added George. “Some advice from Simon Fleet certainly helped, and I felt much more confident with throwing the car into the corners, eventually shaving two seconds off my personal best.“The car felt superb, although tyre wear meant I made a crucial error in the latter stages of Saturday’s second race at Murrays – the hairpin before the main straight – which cost me dearly.“However, I’m constantly learning to manage the tyres with every race that passes, which is especially important when you’re battling with other drivers on a circuit with corners that punishes the rubber. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Snetterton. It’s a challenging, quick and old-school circuit that certainly separates the men from the boys!”Grant will hope his performance on the super-quick Snetterton layout pays dividends when the MaX5 season resumes at Hampshire’s similarly fast Thruxton on September 20.
