Elfyn Evans targets Wales Rally GB success

Hot-seat’ insight for journalistsWith the British round of the World Rally Championship fast approaching, WRC star Elfyn Evans gave guests and media a valuable insight to the world of rallying this week. They enjoyed a privileged ‘hot-seat’ ride with Welshman Evans in Cumbria while he tested his M-Sport Fiesta RS in anger preparing for the WRC finale in Wales on 13 – 16 November.Fresh from his fantastic fourth place on Rally Germany, equalling his best ever WRC result (he was also fourth in Mexico) in his highly successful ‘Rookie’ year, Evans was eager to test the M-Sport Fiesta in preparation for Wales Rally GB in November.Evans and co-driver Daniel Barritt won the WRC2 category in the M-Sport Fiesta S2000 in Wales Rally GB 2013, enjoying a fantastic following from the home crowd as they spurred the duo on. Evans will be competing against top drivers and teams from all over the world when the competition comes to Britain, including fellow British driver, Kris Meeke. Citroën driver Meeke has scored two podium finishes this year in two of the most demanding events on the WRC calendar. This will be the first time in 11 years (since the Colin McRae, Richard Burns era) that two top British drivers will fight for honours at their home event.Britain’s round of the World Rally Championship means a lot to both drivers, but particularly Welshman Evans as he flies the Welsh flag on his full WRC debut year.Elfyn Evans commented: “Wales Rally GB means a great deal to me because it will be my first opportunity to drive a World Rally Car at home, starting five miles from my front door on the Gartheiniog stage. That is going to be a pretty special feeling.“We’ll definitely be gunning for the best result possible; it was a good event for us last year, if we can have a good result again this year that would be very positive for us. We’ve always gone well in the forests, so hopefully more success will be coming our way this year.”Elfyn, who currently lies seventh in the World Rally Championship standings, and his team were using Greystoke Forest to test the set-up of the Ford Fiesta RS WRC. While most of Elfyn’s competitors have been testing on tarmac surfaces over the last two weeks, M-Sport took this opportunity to fine tune the car on gravel, ahead of a busy schedule that takes them to Australia, France, Spain and then back to Wales – Elfyn’s home rally and the finale of the World Rally Championship. In addition to passenger rides, media were treated to a tour of the M-Sport headquarters, based at the picturesque Dovenby Hall in Cumbria, where Ford’s formidable pedigree in rallying is demonstrated throughout M-Sport’s state-of-the-art factory and museum. The media were also treated to a glimpse of the Bentley Continental GT3, which M-Sport embarked on designing and developing in 2013.Evans and the M-Sport team will be back in action at Rally Australia on 11 - 14 September. The season finale, Wales Rally GB, takes place on 13 – 16 November. For more information and tickets visit www.walesrallygb.comSHARE THIS:
