George Grant will be hoping to reward Mission Motorsport with a strong eighth-round MaX5 Racing Championship showing at Pembrey this weekend (October 4/5), as his efforts to raise awareness for the official Armed Forces charity come to a conclusion for 2014.The GGR Motorsport driver suffered from a lack of experience at Thruxton last time out, and that same steep learning curve looks set to continue during his Pembrey debut.However, Grant has reason to be confident heading to the home of Welsh motorsport, which boasts sweeping turns and long straights. But with no prior on-track knowledge, he’s keeping his expectations in check.“I’ve never been to Pembrey before, so it’s definitely a step into the unknown,” admitted Grant. “The circuit is almost a mix of Thruxton and Snetterton so, from a set-up point of view, we should be in good shape. I’m also expecting some classic autumnal Welsh rain to arrive at some point, which will surely throw everything into chaos!“Despite having limited experience of Pembrey, a few hours on the iZone Driver Performance simulator has helped me to learn the track and different lines through corners such as the Esses and Honda Curve.”As his first season of competition comes to an end, Grant is able to look back fondly on his and fellow Mission Motorsport-run David Birrell’s year, while recognising the incredible effort put in by the team of physically-impaired mechanics.“It’s been a baptism of fire for the mechanics, who have literally built the car from the ground up while dealing with a range of physical limitations,” added Grant. “However, their military approach, psychologically, is great to see; they’re so enthusiastic and raring to go ahead of every weekend.“To be third in the Mk1 championship – as a double amputee – is seriously impressive for Dave. Without question I’ll be providing all the encouragement I can to help him secure the position at Pembrey.“From a personal point of view it’s been great fun and I’m already looking ahead to next year.
