A fantastic race from the Trident driver, finding a good pace and avoiding mistakes or race incidents at the Sochi Autodrom, where overtaking maneuvers are always a challenging task.
Sergio Canamasas came 7th and tomorrow he will start 2nd on the grid of the sprint-format race.
Canamasas, who qualified 12th on the starting grid made a good start overtaking two rivals during the opening stages of the race.
He pitted for his mandatory pit-stop on lap seven, just before the safety car was deployed due to Stefano Coletti stoppingon the Russian Sochi track. As his race pace improved every lap, Canamasas was gaining several positions with the race coming to an end.
With two laps left, he was 8th and, in the very dying moments of the race, he managed to pass Marco Sorensen and finished seventh, scoring six points for the championship. The Barcelona-born driver was able to overtake four drivers in the overall standings.
“The feature race has brought us a good result. And our pit strategy has worked extremely well. We started on soft tires and, when the safety car was deployed, we changed to medium compound. We were able to gain two crucial positions for eight but anyway, at the last corner, I passed Sorensen. 7th place is great reward today”, Canamasas has explained afterwards, pointing out that “we will start second on the grid tomorrow, and my goal is to win. Despite we know how difficult that goal is”.
Sprint race is due to start at 10.05 (CET) on Sunday.
