GP2: Battery problem dashes Canamasas' podium hopes

An unjust outcome Trident's Canamasas' who was forced to retire during Sunday´s GP2 race at the Sochi Autodrom. Electrical gremlins stopped him when he was running in second place and catching up the race leader, Sorensen, who won later.

Sergio Canamasas was very close to claiming another podium finish in the GP2 Series,  celebrating its sprint race at the Sochi Autodrom in Russia. After finishing seventh on Saturday, the only Spanish driver in the series was second on the starting grid, alongside Marco Sorensen.

Everything was going as planned. He retained second place because, despite Stoffel Vandoorne passing him at the start, the Belgian out-braked himself and ran wide with Canamasas re-taking the position. Canamasas was focusing on managing tyre wear correctly, because after twenty-one laps it was a major concern. Canamasas was keeping Vandoorne at bay and then started to catch up Sorensen on lap ten. On lap 13 Canamasas sets record in the first sector, improving his second sector, but then a suspected battery problem forced him to retire. It ruined his chances to claim another podium or a possible victory.

“It looks like a battery problem. It´s a shame because I think it was possible to fight for winning the race. I would like to have had the opportunity at least”, Canamasas said afterwards. The driver concluded by saying that “motorsport is like that, and we need to cope with this kind of things. We did a very good job. We proved it when I was battling with Vandoorne, Nasr or Evans. Despite we couldn´t finish on the rostrum, I am happy with my performance this weekend”.

The final round of the season will take place at Yas Marina Circuit on 21-23 November.
