Avon Tyres British GT Championship 2015 calendar revealed

The Avon Tyres British GT Championship today reveals its provisional calendar for the 2015 season as well as an exciting addition to race category classifications.

The 2015 season follows the highly-popular line-up of circuits as visited in 2014 including a return to the iconic Spa-Francorchamps, this time for a two-hour endurance race rather than this season’s two sprint races.

The season opens with the traditional Easter bank holiday event at Oulton Park, with action on the Saturday and Monday, with this event taking place two weeks earlier than in 2014. May sees a familiar follow-up of Europe’s fastest race track, Rockingham, before heading to the home of British motor racing and venue of the British Formula 1 Grand Prix, Silverstone.

From one iconic Formula 1 circuit to another, Belgium’s Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps sees the season’s sole non-UK round with a two-hour endurance race for July 2015, making a change from the brace of hour-long races in 2014.

Brands Hatch and Snetterton swap places in the season order, with the Brands event taking place at the beginning of August with Snetterton’s pair of hour-long races at the end of the month. The season will reach its no-doubt thrilling conclusion in September at Leicestershire’s Donington Park.

2015 sees the addition of a new Silver Cup Classification reserved for entrants where both drivers are graded Silver. The outright race win will be fought between Pro Am and Silver Cup competitors. Both classes will be balanced by the GT Bureau to race at comparable speeds for the overall classification in GT3 and GT4. A driver pairing of Silver and Gold will not be eligible in 2015.

In order to help cut costs, there will be new rules limiting tyre usage made possible by the extra performance longevity afforded by the 2015 specification British GT tyre from Avon Tyres. All Bronze graded drivers will now have a dedicated Free Practice session.

Benjamin Franassovici, British GT Championship Series Manager:“Following the fantastic season enjoyed by all in 2014 we have only made some minor evolutions to the calendar for 2015 and I’m delighted to confirm that we will return to Spa-Francorchamps and this time for a two-hour endurance race. The Pro-Am and Silver Cup cars will be carefully balanced by the GT bureau so that both classifications will be capable of performing at a comparable pace to enable an outright win. Additionally, we will see a Bronze-only practice session during race weekends. We’ve been working with Avon to help cut costs and their new tyre offers increased performance life meaning teams have agreed to new limitations on the number of tyres which can be used over a race weekend. It's only November but we’ve already had exceptional interest in next year’s championship with numerous deposits received for GT3 and GT4 with continued interest in GTC. Oulton Park is just around the corner…”
