Felix Rosenqvist has taken pole position for the 2014 Suncity Group Macau Grand Prix’s Qualification Race.
Rosenqvist (Mucke Motorsport) recovered from a crash into the barriers during the final free practice session nd with a best lap of 2m11.506s was enough to knock early pace-setter Esteban Ocon off the top spot. “Going into qualifying I went out for two laps just to see how the track was,” said the Swede. “Then we put on four new tyres and I was on my own just getting a rhythm, rather than trying to find a tow.
“I was quite surprised the gap was so big, but in the end it is good when you are on your own and lap-by-lap improve. That was probably the key today.”
Ocon who went second quickest will suffer a two-place grid penalty he got for missing a mandatory weight check in first practice - Max Verstappen who went third fastest will also drop two places for the same offence. Rosenqvist’s team-mate Lucas Auer, who was fourth fastest, will start from the front row in the 10 lap Qualification Race. Provisional pole position man Tom Blomqvist ended up fifth fastest overall, having been unable to improve his Thursday time, but will move up the order thanks to the Ocon/Verstappen penalties
