DD Motorsports driver Mitchell Gilbert has signed for Carlin for this season’s GP3 Series. The 20-year-old joins the team’s 2015 line-up following his short stint in the championship with Trident at the back end of last year and is delighted to be continuing his journey with one of the largest and successful teams outside Formula 1.
He knows he is in good hands after Carlin’s impressive record saw them walk off with the team and drivers’ titles in 2014.
He said: “I’m really excited. They won the drivers’ and team awards last year, so I’m in the best place.
“I know the car is going to be fast and that I should be in the mix, so after a difficult few years I just want to get out there and do it. I’ll be able to let my driving do the talking again.
“I can’t wait to get properly started with them.”
Mitchell raced for British-based Fortec Motorsports in the FIA Formula Three European Championship at the beginning of last season, before moving to GP3 in July with Trident. He is happy to start the new season with a team with the pedigree of Carlin.
Carlin boasts race-winning experience in championships including British F3, Formula Renault 3.5, and the GP2 and GP3 Series, to name a few. They have seen many F1 stars pass through its doors, including Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel.
The Australian starts work with the team engineers in the simulators next week, with official testing taking place in March. He is already more than impressed by what he has seen so far.
He added: “They have so much experience and are so professional, just being in their workshop last week was an eye-opener. It’s on a different level. Their mentality is they are going to win and it makes you feel the same. It’s not about having a mountain to climb, it’s a process to them.
“But I’m not setting myself any targets this year, I just want to get out there and enjoy my racing again – and see where it goes from there.
