The BRSCC Teekay Couplings Production Mk2 GTI Championship has announced that it will continue to work with Toyo Tires as its exclusive control tyre supplier for the 2015 season. The move sees the TOYO R888 used as control tyre for all competitors in this championship, as well as the all-new Mk5 GTI sister race package which will run alongside the Mk2s at all race meetings during the season.
The Production GTi Championship has long been a hit with both crowds and drivers right from the off and sees both 8v and 16v cars battling for supremacy on the UK’s finest circuits. Preparation and driver skill levels are high, making for some seriously close racing and fantastic on-track battles. With costs kept sensible and emphasis placed on driver ability and prepping talents, the series has seen many stars rise through its ranks. The new Teekay Coupling Production Mk5 Championship takes this baton and runs with it for the later generation of much more powerful turbocharged cars. Already in pre-season testing, these cars have been racking up lap times on their R888s that wouldn’t look out of place even higher up the motorsport food chain!
The TOYO R888 has itself become one of the true stalwarts of UK club motorsport. Found as control tyre in dozens of championships and series, its unique blend of varied fitments, high performance and affordable cost make it a real favourite with both drivers and championship co-coordinators. Despite its ultra-grippy ‘semi slick’ design, the R888 copes exceptionally well in the wet and cold, and with full ‘E’ marking and road legality can even be left on to drive to and from the circuit, if required. The perfect clubman tyre!
Commenting on the sponsorship, Championship Organiser Rob Sadler said, ‘We’re delighted to continue with our friends at TOYO as control rubber for the 2015 season. Not only do we value their technical input and advice, but we know that these FWD platforms perform exceptionally well on these tyres, giving drivers the chance to really get the best from their chassis set-up in all conditions.’
Alan Meaker, Motorsport and Technical Director for Toyo Tires UK also commented, “We are so pleased to be working with the Production GTi team once again. The Mk2 grid looks to be huge this year, but the Mk5 has been simply astounding during testing. That car really is very impressive for the build cost and a superb stepping stone to higher TinTop formulae. It’s going to be a fantastic season.”
The first round of the championship will be at Snetterton circuit on the 19th April.
