ELMS racer Charlie Robertson invited onto BRDC Superstars programme

European Le Mans Series racer Charlie Robertson has received another glowing tribute from the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club after today being named as one of just 12 drivers hand-selected for the 2015 BRDC ‘SuperStars’ programme.

The 18-year-old from Whyteleafe, who this year makes the full-time move into pan-European racing where he will share driving duties with Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy as part of the Team LNT Ginetta-Nissan ELMS entry in the brand new LMP3 Class, is unsurprisingly elated to have been given such notable recognition.

Charlie, who won his second car racing title last season during his maiden campaign in the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup, is the only sportscar racer in the BRDC SuperStars line-up this year, with the majority of drivers competing in the ranks of international single-seater competition.

“It really is a huge honour to be named as part of the BRDC SuperStars, I can’t quite believe it”, said Charlie, “I have to thank the BRDC and SuperStars director Tim Harvey for moving me up from the Rising Star programme and into the SuperStars, it really is awesome but quite unexpected as well to be honest. I certainly aim to make the most of the opportunity and to repay the faith shown in me.

“As the only sportscar driver in the SuperStars, it proves the BRDC regards me quite highly which is a real accolade and a huge boost ahead of such an important year in my career. I really can’t wait to work with the other drivers, especially guys like Alex Lynn [GP2 Series racer and Williams F1 Team development driver], and our programme mentor Alexander Sims [BMW factory driver].”

Widely acknowledged as the most prestigious club of its kind in world motorsport, the BRDC invited Charlie to become a ‘Rising Star’ in 2013, off the back of the impressive youngster winning the 2012 Ginetta Junior Championship in only his second year in cars.

Going on to become a multiple race winner in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship, and subsequently being awarded a spot in the coveted McLaren Autosport BRDC Award finals, he returned to the Ginetta ‘family’ in 2014 in the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup where he took a famous title victory.

Now, all focus is on the biggest step of his career so far with the move into endurance competition in the demanding European Le Mans Series. Teaming with fellow Scot and sporting legend Sir Chris Hoy, Investigo-backed Charlie can’t wait for the first test of the brand new LMP3 car.

“It’s going to be awesome racing in the European Le Mans Series this year, especially working with Sir Chris – that’s going to be really cool”, said Charlie, “I’m really looking forward to getting things underway, it feels like so long since the announcement was made before Christmas. I’m absolutely itching to be back in the seat, this is such an exciting new chapter in my career.”

Round one of the European Le Mans Series is scheduled to take place over the weekend 10th/11th April at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit.
