Cameron Twynham has signed with MOMO-Megatron-Partrax for their 2015 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup campaign, which kicks off at the Spanish Grand Prix on May 9/10.Having enjoyed a successful career in competitive single seater championships such as EuroFormula Open and Formula Renault 3.5, the 19-year-old from Market Harborough has decided to make the transition to GT cars and the prestigious Formula 1 support series.“After a lot of soul-searching and discussions with my father and manager I felt it was time to move out of single seaters and into GTs,” said Twynham. “We all believe there are more opportunities in this type of motorsport for young drivers and, these days, it is far more productive than the current state of single seater racing.“I was introduced to the team by my manager Rod Vickery and, after a successful two-day test, was delighted to be offered a contract to drive for them this year.”Despite the challenge of never having driven a GT car before, the skills learnt throughout his single seater career meant the MSA Academy member was soon turning some very impressive lap times. It was for this reason that the team made the decision to sign the Briton there and then as one of their two new young drivers.“Obviously the Porsche is very different to the type of car I have raced for the last four years but I soon found I was able to adapt to the driving style required and post quick lap times,” continued Twynham. “Now I just need to fine-tune my approach during the upcoming tests and learn how to get the most out of the car.“Like so many other young drivers it has always been my dream to race at Monaco, and the Porsche Supercup gives me the opportunity to do just that. It will be great to be part of the Porsche family, and their professional environment on and off the track that has helped so many drivers establish successful careers.”As one of the youngest drivers competing in the championship Cameron is looking at a minimum two-year programme. “This is the most competitive one-make series in the world,” he admitted, “but if you are successful it can be a great opportunity to become a professional factory GT driver, as has happened with previous winners of the championship.”Team owner Andreas Leberle was also very impressed with Twynham’s pace and approach.“Rod Vickery is an old friend and assured me Cameron was the type of young driver we needed in our team,” he said. “The entire team was pleasantly surprised that for such a young driver with no experience of GT cars he was quickly on the pace. He drove faultlessly over the two days, especially in the wet on day one, and didn’t put a wheel wrong. I believe we have a very quick driver with a lot of potential and are looking forward to a strong season together.”For Twynham, Porsche Supercup represents a step towards another of his career goals.“I’m looking forward to the challenge and believe it will also be great preparation for another ambition of mine, which is to one day race at Le Mans. Despite my single seater background I’m still rated as a silver driver and would bring a lot of value to a sports-prototype programme.“I would like to thank everybody who has supported me in my career to date, especially my father. Without his support and total enthusiasm I would not have been able to fulfil my dream.”The 10-race Porsche Supercup season gets underway at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on May 9/10.
