Ahmad Al Harthy positive after British GT qualifying

Avon Tyres British GT Championship front-runner Ahmad Al Harthy says he is feeling positive after qualifying sixth fastest for the Oman Racing Team at Oulton Park International Circuit on Saturday, 4th April, as he aims to make the strongest possible start to his 2015 season.

Securing a competitive third row grid slot for the first of the weekend’s races, which will take place on Monday, 6th April, with a time of 1m36.763 seconds (100.15mph), the 33-year-old from Muscat is confident he and new team-mate Daniel Lloyd can battle for a serious haul of championship points in the season curtain-raiser.

After a damp opening practice session, during which the team elected to only complete a handful of installation laps, track conditions gradually improved during the day and for qualifying the surface was totally dry.

During Lloyd’s session, which determined the grid for round two, the Briton posted the 11th fastest time at the wheel of the No.2 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 and so the team-mates are set to be well and truly in the thick of the action when racing gets underway on Monday. Lloyd’s best lap was a time of 1m35.259 seconds (101.73mph).

“It was a good qualifying for me, starting P6 in the first race is a positive place to be and I am sure our race pace will be strong”, said Ahmad, “It’s especially important to be on the first few rows for the opening race of the year and while we would have liked to be quicker, we’re still happy.

“We want to get as many points as we can from this weekend to make a good start to the season, that’s going to be very important. Dan and I will work hard in the races and I know the team will give us a good car. It’s great to be back at Oulton, I’m really looking forward to Monday.”

Ahmad, who helped the Oman Racing Team secure the GT3 Teams’ title last year and who was also the Vice-Champion in the Drivers’ title race, is embarking on his third season in British GT this year with key backing once again from prestigious partners Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Ooredoo, National Bank of Oman and Al Hashar Group.

Round one of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship will get underway at 12.00 (UK time) on Monday, 6th April, with round two set to follow at 16.00 (UK time). Live timing from both races will be available online at www.tsl-timing.co
