MSA congratulates Meeke and Evans on incredible WRC results‏

On behalf of the British motor sport community, the MSA congratulates Kris Meeke on becoming the first UK driver to win a round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) since his mentor, the late, great Colin McRae in 2002. With MSA Team UK’s Elfyn Evans taking his maiden podium in third place, it was a dream result for UK talent on the Rally Argentina.

Meeke’s breakthrough win ends a 13-year victory drought for UK drivers in the WRC. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman and co-driver Paul Nagle won round four of this year’s championship in Argentina by just over 18 seconds aboard their Citroen DS 3 WRC.

Behind them, 26-year-old Welshman Evans powered to his best result to date, reaching the podium in just his second season with the M-Sport squad, alongside co-driver Daniel Barritt in their Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “What an incredible result and a real shot in the arm for UK rallying. It is fitting that the driver to finally emulate Colin McRae’s success at the top level should be his protégé. Kris has certainly done UK rallying proud and we are confident that this great victory will be the first of many.

“We also couldn’t be happier for Elfyn, who we have been working with for a number of years on our MSA Team UK programme. His rate of progress since joining M-Sport has been a delight to watch and we look forward to having not one but two UK winners in the WRC very soon.”

Robert Reid, 2001 World Rally Champion co-driver and MSA Performance Director, added: “It’s fantastic for UK rallying to see one of our drivers back on the top step of the WRC podium again. There are very few people who actually understand just how hard it is to win a round of the WRC so very well done to Kris and Paul.

“To make the weekend even better, seeing Elfyn and Daniel achieve their first WRC podium is a very special moment for me, as both have come through the MSA Academy and Team UK development process that I am proud to lead.”

Both Meeke and Evans will be in action on Wales Rally GB, the final round of this year’s WRC, on 12-15 November. For more information, visit www.walesrallygb.com
