Michael O'Brien and Chris Mealin claimed a victory apiece to conclude a thrilling weekend (2/3 May) of Duo BRDC Formula 4 action at the Rockingham Motor Speedway. It was O'Brien's maiden F4 success as he came home first in a wet race two, before Chris Mealin dramatically snatched victory away from his Lanan Racing team-mate Rodrigo Fonseca with a last lap overtake in race three; a race screened exclusively live on Motors TV.
As the rain continued to fall at the Northamptonshire venue in the morning, the Duo BRDC F4 field headed out on to the circuit for race two of the weekend. As the lights went out, Jordan Albert made a great getaway from the second row and leapt from fourth to second, immediately pressuring pole-sitter O'Brien into the Deene Hairpin.
O'Brien managed to fend him off and set about opening up his lead, which stood at 2.481s at the end of the first circuit. Will Palmer, who started 17th, spun on the second lap exiting Chapman and dropped back to 19th. O'Brien continued to extend his advantage at the front but this was wiped out when the Safety Car was deployed to clear up the stricken orange machine of Jack Lang, who had gone off on the exit of Deene Hairpin.
After a speedy recovery of the abandoned Lang Sport/Gorse Motors vehicle, the Safety Car pulled in after just one lap at the head of the field and O'Brien made a clean restart. The top-five order was shuffled with Haggerty, Jackson and Bartholomew all making their way past Jordan Albert, relegating him to fifth. Behind, Harri Newey had enjoyed a tremendous few laps and found himself in sixth. It would only get better for the 16-year-old as he gained a further spot on the next lap to move into fifth.
The Mark Godwin Racing car of O'Brien led by 3.351s at the halfway point but there was drama behind as Tom Jackson made slight contact with the left rear of second-placed Ciaran Haggerty, the Ecurie Ecosse/GBR youngster coming into the pits, and retirement, with a puncture at the end of the lap.
As the race headed into its final stages, the red-and-yellow Chris Dittmann Racing car of Tom Jackson, who had inherited second, began taking chunks out of O'Brien's lead, closing to within 1.526s as the field headed onto its final circuit. He got within touching distance on the last lap and was right on the gearbox of O'Brien coming through the Brook chicane, but the 20-year-old clung on and crossed the line 0.658s ahead of his rival to take his first-ever Duo BRDC Formula 4 win. Jordan Albert was a further 4.092s back as he managed to fend off the challenges of Harri Newey and claim the final podium spot.
An enthralling race three of the weekend saw Chris Mealin pull off a daring last-lap move on his team-mate Rodrigo Fonseca to secure victory. As Motors TV provided live coverage of the championship for the first-time in series history, all 20 drivers put on a great show with the Lanan Racing duo being joined in the top-three by Sean Walkinshaw Racing's Zubair Hoque, his maiden visit to the BRDC F4 podium.
The Lanan Racing trio of Fonseca, Jack Bartholomew and Mealin led the field away at the start with Jordan Albert making another good getaway in his Sean Walkinshaw Racing car to slot into fourth. Ciaran Haggerty attempted a move around the outside at Deene Hairpin from his starting position of 10th on the opening lap but ran wide and clouted the tyre barrier to end his race prematurely.
Zubair Hoque looked in a determined mood and overtook Jack Bartholomew for fifth as Rabindra snuck past South African Lanzetti at Yentwood, but then went off immediately at Pif-Paf as his right rear wheel made contact with Lanzetti's front-wing. That allowed Hoque to get past both the Indian driver and Lanzetti to move into the podium places.
With Fonseca holding a slender 0.398s lead on lap eight, Ameya Vaidyanthan suffered contact exiting Tarzan and pirouetted across the School Straight, hitting the barrier and bringing the Safety Car out.
With three laps left, the Safety Car pulled off and Mealin began sizing up his team-mate. As they headed on to the last lap, he was just close enough to send his car up the inside of Fonseca at Deene Hairpin. The Mexican left his fellow red-and-white Lanan Racing car enough room and was forced to concede the lead. He attempted to fight back but Mealin had him covered and the 21-year-old crossed the line a mere 0.385s ahead of his rival. Zubair Hoque finished third with Jack Bartholomew and Tom Jackson completing the top-five.
Speaking after the race, Mealin said: "It is an unbelievable feeling. Time was running out so it was really all on that one move and I knew I had to get as close as I could. Once I went for it, there was no going back and luckily I judged it to perfection."
The 21-year-old leaves Rockingham as the championship leader on 140 points; his team-mates Fonseca and Jack Bartholomew a further 16 points and 36 points adrift in second and third respectively.
