The Barcelona-born driver delivered another remarkable performance on the streets of Monte Carlo and grabbed fourth place with his MP Motorsport car in the second race of the GP2 Series. Canamasas, after bordering on perfection throughout the weekend, scored twenty-three points.
Sergio Canamasas will long remember this weekend in Monaco as the Spaniard, following his amazing result on Friday when stepped onto the podium in the Grand Prix of Monaco. In Race two Canamasas was a real eye-catcher once again for the crowd attending the event.
Starting from sixth on the grid, Canamasas passed Charles Pic on the outside at Sainte Dévote, his favorite corner. This challenging bend was where shortly after he overtook Julián Leal as well. Canamasas was able to out-breaking the Colombian driver into the narrow turn for fourth place on lap 7. But, by then, the top three had pulled away and, although the driver of MP Motorsport was lapping quicker than anyone else on the track, his metronomic efficiency wasn´t enough to catch them. Despite this, his fourth place was another amazing result to round off his Monegasque weekend. Now Canamasas sits 8th overall on 23 points, only five behind fourth-placed driver.
“Today´s race has had a thrilling start as rain threat at the beginning meant we were ready to begin on wet tires, but finally the sprint race was held in dry conditions. Track temperature was quite low and it wasn´t that easy to take the most out from the tires. At the beginning I couldn´t pass Leal and Sirotkin built a gap”, the Spaniard explained. In the end Canamasas underlined that “my pace was quite good at the end, faster than others. Maybe I would have caught Sirtokin with two extra laps. I am extremely happy because our problems with traffic in qualifying weren´t a good start but we improved that performance. For me the key moments were those overtaking maneuvers on Pic and Leal, which is never easy in Monaco”.
