High-octane Porsche Carrera Cup action resumes at Oulton Park

Fresh from supporting the Porsche factory works team in the World Endurance Championship at Spa-Francorchamps, the rejuvenated Porsche Carrera Cup GB returns to the BTCC support package at the challenging Oulton Park circuit. Taking place on 6 – 7 June, the Cheshire circuit will play host to rounds 5 & 6 of the Championship.

After a one-year break from the Championship calendar, it will be a true spectacle as the record 11-team grid takes on the 2.2 mile Island circuit, widely regarded as one of the country’s most demanding for car and driver. The talented field will have to have their wits about them to master the track’s blind crests and natural undulations.

The 21 previous Porsche Carrera Cup GB races at the renowned Cheshire venue have produced some of the most exciting on-track action in the Championship’s history and this year looks like it will be no exception thanks to the strength in depth in each of the categories.

Early season front-runner, Dan Cammish, will be wishing for more success following his hugely impressive start to the season, which has seen him clinch victory at three of the four races thus far. The Nationwide-backed Redline Racing driver sent out ominous signals with his pace in the second race in Belgium as he extended his points advantage to 14. The 26-year-old has adapted seamlessly to sportscar racing and although the season has not yet reached the halfway point, Cammish seems the man to beat.

He won’t have it all his own way though with multiple race winner Stephen Jelley (Team Parker Racing) and Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar Josh Webster hoping to eat into his lead. Defending champion Webster was crowned ‘Driver of the Weekend’ after securing double pole position and a lights-to-flag victory in the opening race at Spa, meaning he comes into the weekend full of confidence.

Former double champion Michael Meadows (Samsung SUHD TV Racing) will be another driver to watch, having won the last three Porsche Carrera Cup GB races at Oulton Park. The Oxford-born racer has started on pole for each of those victories and should be firmly in the mix throughout the weekend. His teammate Nicholas Latifi will also be looking to continue his run of strong performances and make up ground on the pace setters.

Championship returnees Paul Rees (Parr Motorsport) and Victor Jimenez (IN2 Racing) will be after a strong weekend to move up the points table and rookies Dino Zamparelli (Parr Motorsport), Jayde Krugar (Brookspeed) and Tom Sharp (IDL Racing) will be looking to build on their positive early-season showings.

Things are as tight in the Pro-Am1 category with Nantwich-based Jordan Witt (Redline Racing) and Team Parker Racing’s Karl Leonard in hot pursuit of class leader Ignas Gelzinis. The Lithuanian’s lead stands at nine points thanks to his category win in the final race in Belgium but things could all change in Cheshire. Redline Racing’s Jack Falla and Parr Motorsport’s Mark Cole are not far behind either and could force their way into the mix at the top of the standings.

Small margins also separate the main contenders in the Pro-Am2 class. Iain Dockerill (Asset Advantage Race Team) currently sits top of the pile by three points from Stokesley-based John McCullagh and there are only ten points back to Francis Galashan (GT Marques), Nerijus Dagilis (Juta Racing) and Tautvydas Barstys (Juta Racing) in joint fifth. One good result could propel them up the standings.

After qualifying on Saturday (6 June) at 12.05, round five of the Carrera Cup GB will start at 17.10 later that day. Round four will commence at 16.15 on Sunday (7 June) and will be broadcast live on ITV4.
