Barry Sheene Race and Rally Festival, Sunday Review

In contrasting conditions to Saturday, clear blue skies greeted everyone at Oliver’s Mount for the second days racing at the Barry Sheene Race & Rally Festival.

The opening Classic Race saw Marc Coggon complete the double at the 2015 Barry Sheene meeting, heading home Ryan Farquhar and Peter Boast.

Next up was the Modern Lightweights which saw Rhys Hardisty leading at the end of the first lap of eight, followed by Derek Clark 1.3 seconds adrift with Paul Owen in third.

A lap later the gap had been cut to 0.134 of a second between Hardisty and Clark with Owen still third.

The lead was even less at the end of the third lap just 0.011 of a second!

At half distance, Hardisty had increased his advantage to 0.241 of a second, but a lap later the gap was down to 0.105 of a second but Owen was now second, with Clark third.

At three-quarters distance Paul Owen had taken the lead and put a one second gap between himself and Rhys Hardisty as Derek Clark remained in third place a further 1.6 seconds down.

Hardisty Was back in front at the end of the seventh lap with Clark now second 1.6 seconds down and Owen back in third some four seconds off the lead.

At the chequered flag Rhys took his second victory of the weekend by 0.174 of a second from Derek Clark and Nick Anderson after Paul Owen suffered machine trouble on the final lap.

Race 9 was the second leg of the Barry Sheene F1 Superbike race. Lap one of eight saw Dean Harrison in the lead by 1.370 seconds from Ryan Farquhar, followed by Jamie Coward and James Cowton.

Lap 2 and Harrison had increased his lead to 2.582 seconds with Coward just half a second down in third.

Lap 3 and a further 0.700 of a second had been added to the lead as positions changed between Cowton and Coward with Cowton in third.

Half distance saw with a 3.536 seconds advantage, with another 3 seconds between Farquhar and Cowton.

By lap 5 Dean had put 4.320 seconds between himself and Ryan and at the end of the three-quarter distance lap it was 4.913 seconds as Lee Johnston moved into fourth between Cowton and Coward.

Lap 7 and the gap was over 5 seconds and at the flag the gap between 1st & 2nd was 7.045 seconds for Dean Harrison ahead of Ryan Farquhar with James Cowton third.

Next up was the Supersport race, saw Ivan Lintin with a 0.708 of a second lead at the end of the opening Lap of eight from James Cowton with Mick Goodings in third.

Lap 2 the lead was up to 2.993 seconds, lap 3 5.717 seconds and at half-distance Ivan had extended his advantage to 6.999 seconds with Mick Goodings a further 6 seconds behind James Cowton in third.

Lap 5 and Lintin added another 2.3 seconds to his lead and increased it even further on lap 6 to 11.432 seconds and the chequered flag Ivan had a 13.333 second lead over James Cowton with Mick Goodings third.

The penultimate race of the day was for Modern Senior machines, saw Ivan Lintin heading the ‘freight train’ of Mick Goodings, Dean Harrison, James Neesom, Mark Goodings and Jay Bellers-Smith with a 3.6 second lead.

Darren Cooper moved into sixth on lap 2, as Lintin improved his lead to over 5 seconds.

Whilst Lintin was 7.1 seconds ahead at the end of lap three the gap between Mick Goodings and Dean Harrison was just 0.3 of a second as they battled for second spot.

Half distance and Ivan had pulled another 2 seconds ahead of Mick Goodings as the distance between him and Dean Harrison remained at 0.3 of a second.

Harrison was into second at the conclusion of the fifth lap and had clawed by half a second back from Lintin.

Lap 6 and another half second had been pulled back and a lap later a further 0.3 of a second had been sliced off the leader’s advantage.

At the chequered flag Ivan Lintin took the honours 7.241 seconds ahead of Dean Harrison, with the battle between the Goodings brothers going to Mick in third.

The final race of the day and the meeting was the eight lap race for SuperTwins. 

Once again it was Ivan Lintin who led the race at the end of the first lap by half a second from James Cowton with Tom Robinson in third. Ivan added a second to his advantage by the end of the second lap. By half-distance Ivan held a lead of 5.317 seconds over James Cowton, with Tom Robinson still third but some 21 seconds back.

At three-quarters distance, lap 6, the lead was up to 7 seconds and at the final chequered flag of the meeting Ivan Lintin finished 7.100 seconds ahead of James Cowton, to claim his fourth victory of the Barry Sheene Race & Rally Festival. Nick Anderson finished third.
