Garry Jennings achieved a sensational overall victory on last weekend’s Joule Donegal International Rally (June 19-21), using his Kumho-shod Subaru S12B to beat Declan Boyle’s Ford Fiesta WRC into second place by no less than 1 minute 7.1 seconds. This is the second time 2013 Irish Rally Champion Jennings has won the island’s premier event in the last four years. It was also a highly notable result for his Letterkenny-based co-driver Rory Kennedy, who last triumphed in his home rally exactly 20 years ago, and has since become the most successful co-driver in the history of the Irish Tarmac championship.
The pair began the final leg with a comfortable margin of 48 seconds but, far from then playing things safe, Jennings proceeded to set a further four fastest stage times before finally easing the Subaru onto the finish ramp.
This memorable victory was achieved using Kumho’s latest stiffer-cased CO3 tarmac rally tyres in K51 compound. Commenting on the result Kumho Motorsport’s Steve Thompson remarked: “This was a truly dominant drive by Garry, who left his rivals trailing in his wake. Following the event he sent me a text that simply said ‘the tyres were class’, and on everybody’s behalf I’d like to congratulate those in our ever-innovative R&D department for producing yet another winning product.”
