Indian teenager Tarun Reddy secured a well-deserved season best top four MSA Formula result at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire over the weekend, 27th/28th June, with a highly competitive drive for Double R Racing in round 13 on Saturday afternoon.Added to sixth position in round 14 and ninth in round 15, Reddy climbs into the championship top 12 for the Woking squad. For Brazilian team-mate Matheus Leist, sixth in race one, fifth in race two and then seventh place in race three on Sunday means he remains fourth in the standings. On a very busy weekend for Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt’s team, the squad was also in action at the Norisring street circuit in Germany for another incident-packed instalment of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.German racer Nicolas Pohler took a best result of 22nd place in round 16, despite a weekend plagued by misfire issues, with Matt Solomon’s best of 25th coming in round 17 – the Hong Kong driver frustratingly forced to retire from the other two contests.“We’re elated for Tarun, he performed very well all weekend at Croft and definitely deserved his top four which will hopefully be a bit of a breakthrough for him”, said Hieatt, “Matheus racked-up some good points again, that sort of consistency is exactly what we need for the championship.“Unfortunately, the Norisring wasn’t too kind to us in the F3 with Nici and Matt having a pretty torrid weekend. We changed all manner of wiring looms to try and get to the bottom of the misfire with Nici’s car and Matt was very unlucky out on track. It wasn’t the weekend any of us planned.”Consistently strong outing at Croft for Reddy and LeistLeist began round 13 of the MSA Formula season on Saturday from eighth on the grid with Reddy just behind in ninth and it was the Indian who made the better start, slicing through into the top six during an impressive opening lap while Leist held eighth.Reddy continued his progress by taking fifth on lap two and after reeling in the top four, he then moved up into fourth place on the final lap at the hairpin after Daniel Ticktum and Lando Norris tangled. Post-race Ticktum was excluded, which elevated Reddy into third position for a maiden podium, but with the penalty being appealed Ticktum was reinstated for the time being.Leist, meanwhile, ran in eighth position until lap 11 when he took seventh place and the Brazilian then moved into sixth on the last lap after a strong and competitive drive at the wheel of his Ford EcoBoost powered car.For round 14 later in the afternoon, Leist began the encounter third on the grid with Reddy just behind in fifth place and although both got away cleanly from the line they were each edged back a position at the first corner.Leist held fourth place for almost the entire duration, but was nudged back to fifth with a couple of laps to go. Reddy, meanwhile, ran strongly in sixth throughout and after seeing off pressure from Ticktum he ended the outing just 0.7 seconds behind his Double R team-mate.In round 15 on Sunday, Leist started in seventh position but was elbowed back to eighth off the start where he remained until lap six when he sliced past Colton Herta at the exit of Sunny Out, after the American had run wide. In the middle of a very tight battle, Leist maintained seventh position to the finish despite a late tangle on the penultimate lap with the recovering Herta.Reddy started in 10th position and had a fairly uneventful contest, although he was very evenly matched with the group ahead. Remaining in 10th place into the final lap, he was then able to move into ninth place at the expense of Herta.Luckless weekend for Pohler and Solomon at NorisringOver in Germany at the Norisring, round 16 of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship on Saturday morning was held in extremely wet conditions and with a lot of standing water on track officials elected to begin the race behind the Safety Car. When the action commenced at racing speed from the beginning of lap four, Solomon held 25th position with Pohler in 31st place. Both Double R drivers made progress initially but on lap five, Solomon was caught-up in a tangle which dropped him down to 30th position. Making his way back up the order, into 25th place at the halfway point, contact shortly afterwards resulted in retirement on lap 17.Pohler was able to work his way through into the top 20 as the Safety Car was deployed during the final third of the contest, following several incidents, but he was eventually classified in 22nd place, despite problems with a misfiring engine.Round 17 later in the day took place in much improved weather on a fully dry track, with Solomon lining-up in 22nd position on the grid and Pohler taking 32nd place. Exasperatingly for the Double R duo, both had to make early pit visits, Pohler retiring with continued misfire woes despite the team having changed the engine loom and ECU ahead of the contest.Solomon rejoined the race in 30th place after his stop and made progress but on lap 15 his car was involved in an incident with Michele Beretta, resulting in a barrel-roll for the Italian and triggering the appearance of the Safety Car. Solomon was able to continue without problem, but ended the race a lap down, after his earlier pit visit, in 25th place.Race three of the weekend on Sunday morning, round 18, got underway in bright and warm weather but Solomon’s hopes of concluding the weekend on a high with a strong drive from 22nd on the grid ended straight away when a stall, followed by contact from behind, led to immediate retirement.Pohler lined-up 32nd on the grid and after the issues of the day before, the Double R mechanics also changed the chassis loom to try and rectify the misfire once and for all. After a good start and first lap, he climbed into 26th position prior to the Safety Car being deployed and when racing resumed he maintained his placing before climbing into 24th ahead of a second Safety Car intervention. At the second re-start, Pohler held 22nd position and although edged back to 24th place shortly after he re-gained the lost ground when two cars collided on lap 24 at the hairpin. After another Safety Car period, racing got back underway on lap 29 but during the closing stages Pohler was shuffled back to 24th position with debris lodged under the wing affecting the car’s handling.Zandvoort in The Netherlands will host rounds 19, 20 and 21 of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season a fortnight from now, over the weekend 11th/12th July. The MSA Formula campaign, meanwhile, now heads into a six week summer break with the second half of the season set to get underway at Snetterton in Norfolk on 8th/9th August.
