Masters USA: Dayton's double delight at The Hawk

Duncan Dayton flew at The Hawk in Masters USA’s third event of the season at the ever-popular Road America circuit in Wisconsin. The experienced American scored two race wins as Masters USA continued to thrill fans with great racing.James King (March 761) was quick away from the start of the reduced-distance five-lap opener and maintained his lead for two laps, hard-chased by James Hagan (Tyrrell 011), Keith Frieser (Shadow DN1) and a charging Duncan Dayton in his Lotus 79.  By the end of lap two, Dayton had caught the leaders, and battled through to head the pack.  There was a great fight throughout for the next three places with Hagan, King and Doc Bundy (Lotus 79) trading places, but they delayed themselves by squabbling allowing Dayton to race home the winner, with King second ahead of Frieser.

Sunday’s race was an eight-lap feature, with Dayton and King on the front row.  Dayton missed a gear at the end of the rolling start lap, but a gentlemanly King gave the position back, losing some momentum in the process and allowing Frieser through. The first three maintained position throughout but stayed close, with Hagan, Bundy and Tommy Dreelan (March 761) chasing hard behind.  There was no stopping Dayton, though, as he raced home to a double top from Frieser and King second and third.

The next stop for Masters USA is the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion on August 13-16.
