British GT: Win or bust for Osborne and Mowle in Donington Decider

After three seasons with the BMW Z4 GT3, Triple Eight Racing’s Joe Osborne and Lee Mowle head to the final round of the 2015 Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Donington Park this weekend (12-13 September) with a mathematical chance of snatching the driver’s title from under the noses of three of their fiercest rivals. Having had their most competitive season to date since joining the GT paddock, after almost twenty years at the front of touring cars, Triple Eight Racing know only a victory, a first for the team in SRO-organised GT3 racing, will suffice. While Alexander Sims and Marco Attard (Ecurie Ecosse BMW) currently lead the standings by two points, Triple Eight’s Osborne and Mowle sit fourth, 32.5 points adrift of the summit, with a maximum 37.5 on offer at the East Leicestershire circuit. Also in the mix are two notable Aston Martin squads, Beechdean-AMR and Oman Racing Team, organised by former BTCC sparring partners Motorbase. Triple Eight’s intrepid duo require Sims and Attard to finish no higher than ninth, Beechdean-AMR’s Jonny Adam and Andrew Howard eighth, and Oman Racing’s Rory Butcher and Liam Griffin third, to snatch an unquestionably thrilling GT3 Drivers’ crown. The Season So Far After a strong opening weekend for Triple Eight at Oulton Park, where the team left with 25 points and a podium, Rockingham once again created a setback and the #888 BMW finished sixth, but a strong result at the Silverstone 500 thrust Osborne and Mowle back into title contention. At the season midpoint, Osborne and Mowle had 64 points and were third in the standings, some 19 adrift of leaders, Ecurie Ecosse. Things haven’t gone entirely to plan for Triple Eight Racing in the second half of the season however, with a costly DNF at Spa-Francorchamps (notably the only one of the season), a narrow loss to the Ecurie Ecosse BMW team after a thrilling Brands Hatch race, and a challenging weekend in Norfolk some three weeks ago.Past Form At Donington Arriving at Donington this weekend, both Osborne and Mowle are unashamedly confident of getting a good result, on a circuit that has in the past seen them excel. In 2013 Osborne sealed pole-position with a truly masterful lap, before Mowle converted that front row start into a healthy race lead. Only bad luck prevented them from taking a win that day, and with both drivers now in their prime, few would count against the Triple Eight BMW being right at the front of the grid once again. It’s been a thrilling four-horse race all season, with just two marques, Aston Martin and BMW establishing themselves as the cars to beat, amidst a heady field of continental GT opposition. With three visits to the rostrum this season already secured, a record for the partnership of Osborne and Mowle, what chance a maiden victory for the pairing at the Donington Decider? To find out, tune into Motors TV on Sunday at 12:45pm, and strap yourself in for one of the great motor races of modern times.Quotes from the Triple Eight Racing drivers prior to Donington:Lee Mowle: “We’ve had a pretty good season this year, and if it wasn’t for the DNF at Spa, which cost us a good 20 points, we could probably have made this a three-way shoot out. Joe and I know what we have to do and what we can control. Getting pole on Saturday and then driving away from everyone on Sunday is all we can do. I’ve heard we might be in for some changeable weather too, that would suit us at Donington. However, whatever the weather, Joe and I will give it everything this weekend; in British GT you just never know what could happen, so you’ve got to keep pushing for the best result possible until the flag falls.”Joe Osborne: “I think we’re more than just an underdog! While it is achievable, both Lee and I have one goal, and that is to try to win the race together. As the calendar goes, this is probably one of our best shots at it too. We can’t worry about what goes on behind us, and hopefully it will be behind us! We’re the rank outsiders, we’ve got little to lose, but we can cause trouble for the other guys by winning. That’s our aim!”
