DAYTONA MOTORSPORT DELIVERS OLYMPIC PERFORMANCE AT RACE OF CHAMPIONS
BBC F1's David Coulthard presents victorious Titan Motorsport with Daytona Cup trophyOutstanding performances by DMAX teams in front of world's elite 25 Daytona DMAX teams battled through snow, rain and sunshine in a thrilling kart race last Saturday (21st November) at London's Olympic Stadium to compete for the prestigious Daytona Cup trophy. This epic endurance took place in front of huge crowds who had gathered to watch Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Jenson Button, Jason Plato, Susie Wolff, Jorge Lorenzo, Tom Kristensen and a raft of other professional drivers compete in the annual Race of Champion contest. After the incredible 1.5 hour DMAX marathon, the worthy victors, Titan Motorsport, were presented with their hard-fought Daytona Cup trophy by BBC 1's David Coulthard in front of an impressed and delighted audience.
Daytona Motorsport's highly experienced team of kart race specialists configured the circuit early on Saturday morning and prepared 25 high-performance Rotax-Max powered DMAX karts in readiness for the Daytona Cup. After the eager 75 DMAX competitors had breakfasted in the Race of Champions Media Conference Room, Daytona's Jim Graham thoroughly briefed them on the circuit and format - and then the snow began to fall.
The drivers were then escorted out to the Daytona pit-lane for their first view of the very wet circuit - and the teams set about qualifying for the 1.5 Hour endurance race. BCR Motorsport qualified on Pole Position alongside GTS Racing, with Kempower Motorsport and Titan Motorsport behind them on row two.
Once all 25 karts were gridded up, the Daytona DMAX pace kart led them on a parade lap before the teams saw the green start lights and roared down into turn one. Over the next 90 minutes, the teams of three drivers kept up an incredible pace on the track, despite the appalling weather conditions - with quick pit-stops to change drivers and to refuel.
At the chequered flag, Titan Motorsport were victorious ahead of Team Ultimate and Kempower Motorsport. After a short break and a chance to dry out, the top three teams were invited onto the podium for an awards ceremony hosted by David Coulthard. The drivers then settled in to watch the Race Of Champions - a knockout tournament featuring a host of leading professional racing drivers from the realms of F1, BTCC , World Rally and MotoGP - and were looking forward to to a planned kart race between the RoC drivers.
As the Race of Champions raced on, there were a number of delays, including Sebastian Vettel’s car dropping oil on the circuit, and the live TV coverage deadline meant that the kart race was unfortunately cancelled for 2015.
Daytona Motorsport looks forward to the next Race of Champions and also to seeing Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button, Felipe Massa et al, racing in Daytona’s DMAX karts!
