Gooding and Co - Amelia Island Auction results

Some big sales predictably with some of the great cars on offer - excluding the Seinfeld Porsche stuff which is covered below seperately - here are some highlights:

1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider sold for $17.16m or £11.93m- Covered headlight SWB - 1 of 37 - never been fully restored - cool history (but does a Cal Spyder exist with poor history?) - only 3 Italian owners from new and never publically offered for sale before - gone to UK owner?

1995 Ferrari F50 sold for $2.31m or £1.6m- 1 of 55 US spec cars - from total production of 349 - 5000 miles - engine derived from Ferrari 641 F1 car - sounds operatic - unfairly overlooked in comparison to it's older F40 sibling?

(best ever video comparison by Chris Harris with F40 and F50 on track here >>>>>)

1966 Ford GT40 Mk I sold for $3.3m or £2.29m

- 1 of 31 Original Road Coupes Produced - 3200 miles(!) - just exquisite and valued against a 275 gtb/4 - think this is a different league of excitement? - well bought

1966 Abarth 1300 OT Periscopio sold for $506k or £352k- Unbelievably beautiful and exotic car with great period race history - ex Rosso Bianco - 1 of 50 built 1 of only 12? with periscopio fitted? - 1300 screamer with 145 hp and will weigh the square root of **** all - eligible for just about any event - when did you last see one? I simply cannot understand how if you attended Amelia Island with $500k to spend you could have overlooked this car - it is ****ing gorgeous!!!! Lucky new custodian - hope it is shown in public - preferably raced a little for all of us to enjoy.

1964 Shelby 289 Cobra sold for $1.32m or £917k- Sold above estimate of $950k-$1.1m - Extensive Period SCCA Race History - Quality Restoration by Canepa - Campaigned at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Goodwood Revival - came with Le Mans Hardtop and Spare Engine - proper blue-chip historic competition car which ticks all the boxes and unlikely to be anything than a solid safe haven store of your wealth - well bought.

JERRY SEINFELD PORSCHE COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS

Was Jerry bailing out because he believes it is top of the market time - or simply thinning out his extensive collection and getting rid of Pork that he does not use much - and it is time to hand over the baton to new custodians? I would have thought it is the latter - he does not need the money - he's had some fun - and still has A LOT of cars left to play with - and yes he will have trousered an 8 figure sum - which he doubtless can plough back into some other stuff.

1955 Porsche 550 Spyder sold for $5.335m or £3.719m- An Original, Unrestored 550 Spyder - Just Three Owners over the Past Five Decades - As-Delivered Color Scheme; Beautifully Preserved Upholstery - Matching-Numbers Example with Just 10,500 Miles from New - a pretty good example of a 4 cam Porsche Spyder

1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 IROC RSR sold for $2.31m or £1.6m- One of Only 15 RSRs Specially Built for Roger Penske’s IROC Series - Raced in Period by Revson, Johncock, Follmer, Forbes-Robinson, and Minter - Well-Documented History and Complete Unbroken Provenance - Faithfully Restored by Jim Torres in Original Light Yellow Livery - Beautifully Presented, Consistently Maintained, and Road RegisteredOk - one of the best known 911's made - makes the lesser and much more populous 2.7 RS - either M472 or sexy M471 look expensive in comparison - this is on another league - gorgeous

1990 Porsche 962C sold for $1.65m or £1.147m - Works 962C Run by Joest Racing with Porsche Factory Support - Campaigned in 1990 FIA World Sports-Prototype and 1991 Interserie Championships - Driven by Bob Wollek, Frank Jelinski, “John Winter,” and Bernd Schneider - Restored in 2001 to Ultimate Singer Double-Wing Specification - Just Two Owners from New – Joest Racing and Jerry SeinfeldUltimate spec double wing good for 230 mph(!) - ok it's not a roadcar - but a serious amount of tackle for just over a bar

1966 Porsche 911 sold for $275k or £191k- An Exceptionally Well-Preserved SWB 911 - Striking(!) Original Color Scheme of Sand over Brown - Delivered New to Colorado; Less than 19,000 Original Miles - Owned by Noted Porsche Collectors for Over 30 Years - Best in Class and Division at Three Consecutive Porsche ParadesOk it's a show car really isn't it? - and as such does not float my boat - but gently exercised and preserved will doubtless continue to collect cups on concours lawns

2012 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup 4.0 Brumos Commemorative Edition sold for $462k or £321k- One of Five GT3 Cup 4.0 Brumos Commemorative Editions Built - Specification Matches the 2011 Championship-Winning Grand-Am Car - Purchased New by Jerry Seinfeld Directly from Brumos Porsche - Virtually As-New Condition with Less than Two Hours of Track Use - A Highly Collectible Factory-Built Racing 911So - for the price of a LHD GT3 RS 4.0 - you could be into this racecar. It has had 1.5 hours track exercise from new - got great provenance and I am sure you could road register it with a bit of creativity - this was not an expensive car

1994 Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 S Flachbau sold for $1.017m or £707k- One of Only 76 Examples of the Porsche Exclusive-Built 964 Turbo 3.6 S Flachbau - Equipped with High-Performance Code X88 Engine - One of 39 US-Spec Models Built; the Sole Example Finished in Polar Silver Metallic - Just Three Private Owners and Just Over 12,500 Miles from New - Complete with Handbooks, Tool Roll, and Certificate of AuthenticityOk - as a 964RS owner - I love 964's but without any real race lineage - I don't really get this car BUT - it's probably the reference example and for a collector it ticks all the boxes

1959 Porsche 718 RSK sold for $2.86m or £1.99m- One of Only 34 Type 718 RSK Spyders Built - Extensive Decade-Long North American Racing History - Driven in Period by Motorsport Legends Roger Penske and Lake Underwood - Restored by Noted Porsche Spyder Specialist Joe Cavaglieri - Eligible for just about any event - revs to 7600 rpm...

The 917/30 was unsold - but you need elephant size balls to drive it and if you want it - you know who to contact.

All in all - good results sum up the current trend - great cars sell for great money - market is more selective these days - but there is still a load of money out there for collector cars with great provenance and superb condition.

Buy of the sale? For me - the 1966 Abarth 1300 OT Periscopio which sold for $506k or £352k - mere chump change in this company!
