Lando Norris out to extend Euro F3 Championship lead

Lando Norris sets out to increase his FIA Formula 3 European Championship lead in Germany next weekend (9-10 Sep). Lando will start the first of three races around the 2.25-mile Nürburgring track on Saturday morning with an 11-point lead after 21 of this year’s 30-races. The 17-year-old McLaren-Honda Young Driver, who attended the recent Belgian Grand Prix, has been awesome in his maiden F3 season.

His 2017 formguide at the wheel of a Carlin prepared Dallara-Volkswagen is truly impressive: 7 pole-positions in 14 front row race starts; 7 wins in 15 top-three podium race finishes; 5 fastest race laps. Especially so considering he has just 24 Euro F3 Championship races under his belt and he’s battling with drivers for the outright title like Maximilian Günther (D), Joel Eriksson (SWE) and Calum Ilott (GB) who have accumulated 81, 51 and 84 race starts in the series respectively.

Lando, a BRDC SuperStar, recorded pole-positions, a race win and a fastest lap at the German venue in Formula Renault last year. Practice gets underway on Friday (1145-1310 local) with qualifying for Race 1 later that afternoon (1750-1810). The first race is on Saturday (1045) with qualifying for races 2 & 3 at 1745. Sunday’s races are at 1105 & 1655.

“There is still a long, long way to go and while it’s nice to be back in the championship lead, I’m under no illusion that I need to be 100% focussed for the remaining nine races if I’m to have any hope of claiming the championship title. The Spa and Zandvoort events have shown that I’ve nailed my race start issues that caused me problems at the beginning of the season. I’ve won five of the last eight races and winning is always my focus. I’m not content to sit behind someone in a race just to score points towards the championship. I start every race aiming to win. That’s the way I competed in karts and took the same philosophy in to single-seaters.”
