Niko Kari switches to MP Motorport for second full GP3 season

Finnish driver Niko Kari will compete in the GP3 Series for a second full season in 2018, having completed a deal with MP Motorsport - the Dutch squad making its series debut this year after taking over the DAMS team’s GP3 entry.

Kari, who took a race win during his maiden season in GP3, joins MP Motorsport after a very successful post-season test at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit, where the Finn topped the timesheets on two of the three days. Kari’s Abu Dhabi form led to talks from which a finalised contract with MP emerged.

"I’m extremely pleased to be joining MP Motorsport", said Kari, "We worked together quite well at Abu Dhabi – in fact, our cooperation was so positive that I was really keen on joining the team. I’m happy that we managed to agree terms for my second season in GP3 and I'm really hoping for a repeat of our test form in the series!"

"It’s so good to see Niko join our team after we showed such good form in the GP3 test at Abu Dhabi", said Sander Dorsman, MP Motorsport’s team manager, "I’m confident we can build on that performance going into our debut season and help Niko gain more wins in GP3."

Kari finished 10th in last year’s GP3 Series, capping the season with victory during the first of the Abu Dhabi races. He managed a further podium earlier in the season, taking third place in race two at Silverstone.

Having taken the SMP NEZ F4 title in 2015, his debut season in single-seaters, Kari moved up to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2016, taking a win and five podiums. He also made his first GP3 appearance that year at Spa-Francorchamps, filling in for Ralph Boschung for two races.
