Daniel Lloyd joins West Coast Racing for opening round of TCR UK

Daniel Lloyd has penned a deal with Swedish-based team WestCoast Racing to pilot the squad’s third Volkswagen GTI TCR at the inaugural round of the TCR UK Championship this coming weekend (31 March – 1 April).

Former GT and BTCC driver Lloyd already has extensive experience of the TCR concept. The 26-year old joined the Craft-Bamboo team for the second half of the 2017 TCR International Series, the highlight of which was a brilliant second place in the opening race at Oschersleben, when he was only beaten by WestCoast Racing’s Gianni Morbidelli. He was also one of the two drivers involved in the 2018 Balance of Performance test at Valencia in February.

Lloyd commented: “I’m really excited about TCR UK and joining one of the most professional teams in the field. It’s a one-off entry at present because of the budget situation, but I really hope it’ll become a full-season campaign as I had a good time in TCR International last year and I’ve had good sponsors in the UK in the past so it’ll be great to build up a UK programme again.

“The Volkswagen Golf isn’t too dissimilar to the SEAT I drove last year; it’s good that the cars are so alike as we haven’t been able to do any testing because the entry was such a last-minute deal.”

The 26-year-old’s impressive performance as part of the Craft-Bamboo team’s line-up during last season’s TCR International Series caught the eye of Dick Jönsson Wigroth, WestCoast Racing Team owner, and the Yorkshireman has been drafted in for the opening weekend at Silverstone alongside siblings Jessica and Andreas Bäckman.

The Team Owner added: “We’re all really pleased to be adding a third car for the opening TCR UK races, particularly for such a talented driver as Dan. I thought he was one of the best talents in the TCR International Series last year and so I’m delighted that he’ll be in a WestCoast Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI for Silverstone. It’s currently a one-off entry, but I’m keen to expand his programme to a full season in TCR UK.”
