‘Inters’ all set to roar back into Rockingham

After more than 30 years GTI International, affectionately known as ‘Inters’, is perhaps still the greatest event for UK enthusiasts of high-performance Volkswagen Group models.

Next weekend, 2-3 June, GTI International returns to Rockingham Motor Speedway in Northamptonshire for its annual celebration of sporty Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and ŠKODA models.

This year’s event offers not only the dynamic attractions of a drag strip, full-scale track day and a handling course, but also the chance to see many of the country’s top show cars up close in the Concours and Show ’n’ Shine areas. There will also be displays by most of the major owners’ clubs and forum groups, plus trade stands, car sales, an auto jumble and children’s entertainments.

Staged over the weekend of 2-3 June, GTI International promises busy days of automotive-themed excitement. With on-site camping and entertainment Inters offers something for everyone – from confirmed Volkswagen enthusiasts wanting to spend a whole weekend away with friends, to families looking for a good day out with plenty to see and do.

The prestigious Rockingham Motor Speedway, near Corby in Northamptonshire, is not only Britain’s only oval track but also includes an infield section, the National circuit, providing the chance for drivers to put their car through its paces. Passengers can also take an exciting ride on the track during fast lap sessions, while there is also a low-speed parade lap session for those who don’t want to trouble their Volkswagen’s ‘red line’.

The SuperPro handling course allows entrants to test their skills around a slalom course, and against the clock. Alternatively, ‘The Sprint’ lets drivers explore their car’s acceleration potential on the eighth-mile stretch of road, with accurate recording of 0-60 mph and elapsed time.

Organisers say any road-going or race car is eligible to take part – just turn up, sign on, and run. This element of the event will be managed as a regular track day and drivers and passengers will need to attend a safety briefing. They must also wear a crash helmet, which can be hired.

On both days of the weekend the Inters Show ’n’ Shine area will be packed with some of the most pristine examples of Volkswagen Group cars on display anywhere, featuring not only classic original examples but also modified cars.

Judging spans a variety of categories that cater for numerous Volkswagen models, alongside ŠKODAs, SEATs and Audis.

Traders and exhibitors can be found in the dedicated Trade Area, the pit garages, and in special plots for auto jumble and car sales. There’s also a mobile rolling-road dyno test, detailing, and engine cleaning services on site.

Gates open to campers from 5 pm on Friday 1 June and for the public from 8 am on both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets will be available on the gate, priced at £18, or can be purchased in advance at a discount from the website at www.gtiinternational.co.uk or by calling 01525 750 500.
