MotoGP set for Brazil return

MotoGP is set to return to Brazil in 2021 after Dorna, the promoter of the motorcycling championship, signed a memorandum of understanding with Rio Motorsports.

The race would take place at a new circuit that will be built in Rio de Janeiro.

Rio Motorsport works with local and international investors with the aim of building new tracks in Brazil and plans to construct a new circuit to replace Jacarepaguá, which was dismantled to make way for the Olympic Park ahead of the 2016 summer Games.

Jacarepaguá hosted MotoGP events between 1995 and 2004. No timeframe was placed on the development of the circuit.

“We would be thrilled to see MotoGP return to Brazil and this memorandum of understanding is fantastic news for the championship and South American fans,” Dorna Sports chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta said.

“We have a truly global sport, paddock and grid and to add another country to our calendar – especially one such as Brazil – is always something to aspire to. It would be a pleasure for MotoGP to race in a country and continent known for its passion and incredible atmosphere."
