Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific gears up for China GT Championship

Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific heads to the opening round of the 2019 China GT Championship at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia with six entries, making it the only manufacturer to be represented in all three classes.

Vice champions from 2018, JRM return to race in the opening round with a brand new 2019-spec Porsche 911 GT3 R for Li Chao and triple Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Chris van der Drift in the GT3 class.

Joining them is YC Racing who will field two Porsche cars this event, including one of the previous generation Porsche 911 GT3 R, with driver duties shared by returning duo Min Heng and Lin Nan. The squad will also run a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car in the GTC class.

Arrows Racing has the Macau-hailing duo of Kelvin Wong and Miguel Kong in the GTC-class 911 GT3 Cup car, as will Team 69 with Jacky Wu and Porsche China Junior Daniel Lu, ensuring Porsche is well represented on the 2019 China GT grid.

Team 69 also field the all-new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, which makes its Asia-racing debut this weekend. Racing together are Simon Chan and Jeffrey Zee who show promising pace in the new car.

Prior to the opening round of the season a three-day test has taken place at the 5.543km Malaysian circuit, which the teams and drivers have used to ensure they are fully prepared for the coming season.

Modena Motorsports, ARN Racing and Absolute Racing were also at the test with 2019-spec 911 GT3 R cars in order to assist with preparations for their own respective programs in 2019.

Alexandre Gibot, Head of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific, said: “We are excited to be here to support our customers at the start of the 2019 China GT Championship in Sepang. We are pleased to be so well represented with the new Porsche 911 GT3 R and 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, as well as the former generation 911 GT3 R and the 911 GT3 Cup cars.”

Practice and qualifying will take place on Friday, with the teams gearing up for the all-important GT4 and GT3/GTC races on Saturday and Sunday. Click here for a full event timetable.
