Hillspeed confirms Argentinian Nicolás Varrone ahead of Silverstone

Hillspeed has confirmed that Argentinian driver Nicolás Varrone will join the team ahead of the upcoming BRDC British Formula 3 Championship visit to the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit next weekend (8-9 June), taking the squad’s entry back up to two cars.

Varrone will arrive at Hillspeed’s team headquarters in Derbyshire on Tuesday, 4th June, for a seat-fitting in the Tatuus-Cosworth he will race before then travelling to Silverstone where he will make his test debut on Thursday, 6th June.

The 18-year-old started out his motorsport career in karting, progressing through the ranks in his homeland and taking a best championship finish of third in Argentinian Sudam Junior in 2015. He made his single-seater debut in 2016 in Formula Renault 2.0 Argentina and embarked on his first full season in Formula Renault the following year.

Moving into the VdeV Challenge Monoplace series in 2018, Varrone won the title and claimed six races victories along the way with 11 podiums in total and 13 pole position starts as well as posting seven fastest laps. He also contested 14 races in his national Formula Renault category.

Now Varrone, who is managed by José Manuel Balbiani, is proud to be graduating into British F3 which has, in the past, been graced by a number of compatriots such as Quique Mansilla, Enrique Benamo, Esteban Guerrieri and Víctor Rosso. Additionally, Hernan Fallas raced with Hillspeed in the predecessor championship to the current BRDC British F3 category, BRDC Formula 4.

“I am very happy for this opportunity,” said Varrone. “We will be traveling to Silverstone next Thursday where we are going to have a full day of testing, using new tyres to adapt to the car, we hope to do a good job with a car which has more aerodynamics than I have been used to. Thank you as always to +Vida and my manager José Balbiani.”

Delighted to welcome Varrone to the Hillspeed ranks ahead of the third race meeting of the BRDC British F3 season, team principal Richard Ollerenshaw is looking forward to the test with the teenager next week to prepare him as well as possible for his F3 race debut a couple of days later.

“We’re obviously very happy to welcome Nicolás to the team ahead of Silverstone and delighted to be fielding two cars again,” said Ollerenshaw. “Hopefully we can hit the ground running next week with our test and get Nicolás as well prepared as possible for his debut in the championship. There’s a lot for him to learn but he clearly has some good experience from Formula Renault and VdeV.

“It’s also great to have a team-mate onboard again for Cutter [Sasakorn Chaimongkol] to work with, hopefully they will help to drive each other on and we can push for our best weekend of the season so far when we’re at Silverstone a week from now.”
