Kamui Kobayashi in the #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid still held the lead ahead of teammate Fernando Alonso driving the #8, both more than two hours into their stints. The two Japanese prototypes were trailed by SMP Racing's #11 and #17 BR Engineering BR1s and Rebellion Racing's #3 Rebellion R-One, positions changing between the three in function of refuellings.
The #36 Alpine A470 driven by Pierre Thiriet lost the lead in the Mulsanne Straight after an overtaking by Job van Uitert at the wheel of G-Drive Racing's #26 Aurus. Despite a driver change during the next refuelling, the Russian team kept its advantage on its French rival. Jackie Chan DC Racing's #37 ORECA trailed a short distance behind, ahead of DragonSpeed's #31 ORECA.
The battle raged on in this class with the four lead cars all in three seconds! After the latest refuellings, the #92 Porsche 911 RSR driven by Laurens Vanthoor held the lead ahead of the #51 Ferrari 488 GTE of Daniel Serra, the #63 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R and the #93 Porsche 911 RSR of Earl Bamber. Trailing at 20 seconds were the #69 and #67 Ford GTs driven by Scott Dixon and Andy Priaulx, respectively.
Three cars continued to fight for the lead: Keating Motorsports' #85 Ford GT driven by Felipe Fraga, Dempsey-Proton Racing's #77 Porsche 911 RSR and JMW Motorsport's #84 Ferrari 488 GTE of Wei Lu at a little more than 30 seconds. The #98 Aston Martin Vantage driven by Paul Dalla Lana had an incident but was able to return to the track, and at the end of the fifth hour, there was an incident for Spirit Of Race's #54 Ferrari 488 GTE of Francesco Castellacci that caused a neutralisation under a Full Course Yellow.
