Iconic touring car races to auction

One of the most famous and successful touring cars ever, a Prodrive built 2000 Ford Mondeo Super Tourer, is being offered by Silverstone Auctions at its Race Retro & Classic Car Sale on the 22nd and 23rd of February.

Offered with an estimate of between £100,000 to £120,000, the car is one of only four that were built by legendary race and rally experts Prodrive. On the back of a rumoured £12m budget from Ford, the cars went on to dominate the 2000 British Touring Car Championship season, finishing first, second and third overall driven by Alain Menu, Anthony Reid and Rickard Rydell respectively.

Commenting on the car, Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions said: “This Ford is quite possibly the greatest Super Tourer of the 2 litre era and most certainly the star of what is arguably the golden era of the BTCC and as such we’re incredibly excited to offer it at auction.”

With one of the four cars written off during the season, only three now remain. With the Championship winning car residing in the Prodrive museum, the 'Reid' car owned and raced by a noted Ford collector, this is a unique opportunity to acquire the final model.

Since its BTCC days this car has competed in the past four seasons of the mainstream historic touring car races, including the Silverstone Classic, having been bought by the current vendor in 2006. It is now also eligible and welcome in for the new HSCC series for period Touring Cars.

The car is offered ‘on the button’, ready to race and has been meticulously maintained by a professional race team for the last 7 years with no-expense spared attention, having been stored in a ‘carcoon’. It is also offered with an extensive set of Works spares and parts, including new crated engine.

Nick added: “This is not just an opportunity to buy a highly useable race car but a unique chance to own a highly collectable racing ‘equipe’ with significant works history. Of course, as well as fantastic competition cars, a wonderful collection of classic road cars will also be on offer at Race Retro.”
