SWB Planning Three Car Assault On Protyre Formula Renault

Protyre Formula Renault Championship squad SWB Motorsport is plotting a potential three-car entry for the 2014 campaign it has been revealed today, Friday, 17th January, off the back of becoming the first of the teams to name its initial driver signing ahead of the new season.

Having already sealed a deal with 17-year-old Jersey-based karting graduate Jack Butel, the Daventry squad is working hard on filling its remaining seats in the popular single-seater series as talks with two other competitors reach an advanced stage.

Butel, who was already associated with SWB’s karting team, began his motorsport career in 2010 where he finished as Vice-Champion of the Jersey Championship 125cc Mini Max class. Claiming his first title the following year in the 125cc Junior category, he moved into 125cc Shifter karts in 2012 and promptly won his second consecutive championship crown.

Making his single-seater testing debut with SWB in one of its Protyre Formula Renault cars last year, Butel impressed team principal Simon Baldry with his performance and will almost certainly be one of the youngest drivers in the championship when the season begins in April.

“We’re extremely happy to have Jack on board at such an important time in his racing career”, said Baldry, “We work hard with our kart drivers to bring them into the Formula Renault team as it's the best place to learn the tools necessary to take them all the way to their goal.

“Jack comes with some good sponsors and they are all keen to support this bright young talent all the way up the ladder. We are putting all we can behind him and will be working hard on our simulator to get him ready for the upcoming testing programme and into the season proper.”

Baldry added: “We’re looking to run a potential three car line-up this year in Protyre Formula Renault as we have a couple of other drivers in advanced talks at the moment. One is a driver who has run with us previously so we’re hopeful of concluding more deals in the coming weeks.”

In addition to its single-seater programme, SWB Motorsport is also set to run two cars again in the Michelin Clio Cup Road Series where the team secured a clean sweep of main season wins during the maiden year of the category in 2013. Plans are also in place to field a car in the Michelin Clio Cup Race Series for the first time.

Rounds one, two and three of the 2014 Protyre Formula Renault Championship will take place over the weekend 5th/6th April at Rockingham International Super Sportscar Circuit in Northamptonshire.
