Historic racers invited onto the grid at Footman James Sywell Classic

Entries are now being taken from historic racers wishing to drive on the ‘Racing Runway’ and ‘Sprint Strip’ at the Footman James Sywell Classic – Pistons and Props motoring festival, held at Northamptonshire’s Sywell Aerodrome on Sat 27th and Sun 28th September.

Quoted as being the ‘surprise hit of the 2013 classic motoring calendar’, the inaugural event saw a varied grid of pre-war to Formula 1 single seaters, sports cars and saloons participating in a demonstration run under clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine.

Individuals and clubs are welcome to express their interest to the organisers who will then review the applications and offer free invitations to create a diverse racing spectacular for enthusiasts to enjoy.

Sywell Aerodrome’s taxiway is transformed into the ‘Sprint Strip’ where dragsters and motorcycles burned up the tarmac. The mile-long main runway, with its smooth surface and high grip concrete, became the circuit with a right hand bend, long straight with midway chicane and 180 degree hairpin before a flying finish.

Each car taking part in the demonstration, which is run in accordance with MSA requirements relating to sprints and hill climbs, gets two runs per session, with two sessions per day. There is also evening refreshments and entertainment.

Away from the motorsport, visitors are treated to amazing aerial displays from aerobatic and formation teams such as The Blades and the Yakovlevs Display team. Chipmunks, Be2s, Wilgas, Tiger Moths, Extra 300s and Tomahawks are just a few of the iconic planes that will fly into the show and landing on the grass airstrip.

Back on the ground, there are fantastic club displays, the Wall of Death, and sideshows will keep families entertained. Music will be provided by all girl harmony group Elle and the Pocket Belles and rockabilly band The Houndogs, with more musical acts to be added to the line up.

The Vintage Village will bring together classic traders with those catering for lovers of nostalgia and the vintage lifestyle. As well as the usual motoring products and services, there will be vintage and retro clothing and accessory traders as well as Auto, Aero and Retro Jumbles.

For those that want to make a weekend of it, camping is available with two nights camping, staying Friday and Saturday night from just £75 per pitch in advance (2 adults & 2 children or 3 adults). This includes tickets for both
