Walkinshaw Reunited With TWR Jaguar On Goodwood Debut

British racing driver Sean Walkinshaw made an emotional first appearance at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed over the weekend, 28th/29th June, where he was reunited with his late father Tom’s 1984 Jaguar XJS for two demonstration runs up the famous Goodwood Hill.Marking the Oxfordshire sportsman’s first ever visit to the world-renowned automotive event, Sean was invited by the Jaguar Heritage Trust to not only get behind the wheel of the famous European Touring Car Championship winning TWR Jaguar – celebrating the 30th anniversary of Tom’s title victory – but to also pilot a Bob Tullius ‘Group 44’ E-Type.With 150,000 spectators attending this year’s Festival of Speed, the annual extravaganza of motoring and motorsport proved as popular as ever with present day stars and cars from the full spectrum of motorsport, up to and including the FIA Formula One World Championship, joining a glorious array of legendary cars and drivers from past decades. This year’s event theme, ‘Addicted to Winning’, was certainly apt for the TWR Jaguar which enjoyed great success in the hands of Walkinshaw Snr. Becoming Vice-Champion of the ETCC in 1983, Tom went on to win the coveted title the following year and also emerged victorious in the 1984 Spa 24 Hours alongside Win Percy and Hans Heyer. In 1985, TWR entered the 5.3-litre, V12 engined XJS in the challenging Bathurst 1000 in Australia where Walkinshaw and Percy enjoyed podium success. Running precisely as it did in period, the TWR Jaguar XJS proved a very popular draw at Lord March’s West Sussex estate over the weekend and Sean was absolutely thrilled to have had the opportunity to pilot his late father’s car.“It was my first time there, first time visiting the Festival and obviously my first time driving up the [Goodwood] Hill, it was an amazing experience and there was an incredible atmosphere”, said the Chipping Norton 20-year-old, “Having the opportunity to drive dad’s XJS was something very special, the car actually hasn’t changed at all – it’s still got the same seat as when he raced it!“They gave me three runs, two in the XJS and then a go in Bob Tullius’ car as well as a bonus. It’s such a good event, fantastic to go there for the first time and have the chance to drive. Hopefully we’ll be able to do something again at Goodwood next year as I’d love to do it all over again.”Returning to his current motor racing commitments, single-seater racer Sean will be back in action in the pan-European EuroFormula Open this weekend, 5th/6th July, at the Hungaroring in Hungary.
