RM Auctions Saturday night Monterey 2014 review

$24m hammer for the Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale was a tremendous result for what is a very desirable car.

Based on last night's performance - the best cars continue to attract very strong money - and Girardo put in a a typically accomplished performance at working the room.

Even a lot of the "Mid - Division" cars are holding up close and sometimes exceeding what were strong pre-sale estimates - $400k for a 356 Speedster anyone?!

Highlights include:

(Buyers premium not included - so add 10% to these)

1972 Nissan Skyline H/T 2000 GT-R - est $125,000 - $175,000 - Hammer = $220K

1965 Aston Martin DB5 - est $1m - $1.4m - Hammer = $1.5m

1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso - est - $1.9 - $2.5m - Hammer = $1.925m

1967 Toyota 2000GT - est - $700k - $900k - Hammer = $950k

1967 Ex-Steve McQueen Ferrari 275 GTB/4 - est - $8m - $12m - Hammer = $9.25m

1961 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster - est - $1.3m - $1.6m - Hammer = $1.25m

1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale by Scaglietti - 1 of 3 - provenance - well everything really - Hammer price = $24m

1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale by Bertone - est - $450k - $650k - Hammer = $600k

1967 Ferrari 330 GTC by Pininfarina - est $750k - $850k - Hammer = $930k

1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy by Scaglietti - est - $2.6m - $3.2m - Hammer = $3.075m

1958 Porsche 356 A 1600 Speedster by Reutter - est - $300k - $375k - Hammer = $400k

1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster - est - $125k - $175k - Hammer = $264k - I think? - Either way - way over estimate

Cars which did not look expensive on the night?

1961 Ferrari 250 GT N.A.R.T. Spider by Fantuzzi - est - $1,2m - $1,6m - Hammer = $925k (£610k after you add premium)Ok - looks are marmite - I like it - but gorgeous provenance - at this price this or a 330 GTC????? Puurleeasse?!!! This is a unique coachbuilt Ferrari - reported to go well with an engine built to nearly 250 TR spec - and considerably lighter than the 250 GTE donor which was converted in period. I can't believe this is not a fun car to drive - which in today's "investment" terms is irrelevant(!) - but at this money you could afford to spank it. You won't find another on a trackday/car event and must be the cheapest way to get into a NART Spider - about 3.7% of the cost of Mr Stroll's admittedly much more desirable NART 275 GTB/4.....

2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione - $1,7m - $2,1m - Hammer = $1.35mOK track only - but good provenance - and I am sure SVA possibilities would exist to get it on the road - in any case for the suitably resourced - entertaining track car or what for below the cost of a boggo Enzo?!!!
