Superb Sussex Trophy kicks of Goodwood Revival Meeting

The 2014 Goodwood Revival Meeting kicked off with a tense battle for victory in the Sussex Trophy as a sell-out crowd watched in awe as 30 stunning 1950s sports racing prototypes raced into dusk.

Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen claimed victory in their Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly’, resisting Bobby Verdon-Roe’s charge from seventh to the runner-up spot in the second half of the hour-long race in his Ferrari 246S Dino, which had started from pole position.

Earlier in the day, an astonished crowd watched on as a pair of Avro Lancaster bombers circulated in formation for the first time since 1964 as the Royal Canadian Air Force’s machine joined the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s example, flanked by pairs of Spitfire and Hurricane fighter aircraft.

The track was opened by a huge parade of ‘Mods and Rockers’ on a variety of scooters and café racers. Actor Phil Daniels, who shot to fame in the 1979 film ‘Quadrophenia’ that dramatised the conflict between the two groups, led the parade on a classic Lambretta.

British Touring Car champion Andrew Jordan took his Austin A40 on pole position for the first part of the St Mary’s Trophy presented by Cazenove Capital Management – held for 1950s production saloons, while his father Mike put the car second for part two later in the day – 18 places ahead of celebrity chef James Martin’s Ford Prefect.

Formula 1 racer Max Chilton’s Ford Mustang will start 15th in the Shelby Cup for pre-1966 saloons powered by the small-block V8 engine while actor Rowan Atkinson’s Ford Falcon will start 25th following Friday’s practice session.

Kevin Schwantz, the 1993 500cc Grand Prix world champion motorcyclist crashed his ultra-rare Manx Norton ‘Featherbed’ in practice for the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy presented by Goodwood by Belstaff, but still qualified sixth for his first UK race in 20 years.

All results are available via TSL Timing and will be updated throughout the weekend.
