THIS CARThis outstanding example of the high-performance 3.4-litre XK150 S Roadster possesses an important position in the development of Jaguar’s classic XK sports car line, and benefits from a recent professional restoration to concours standards.
The Jaguar 3.4-litre XK150 S, of which fewer than 900 examples were built, delivered significant performance dividends with three SU carburetors, straight-port head, upgraded camshafts, and a lightened flywheel. These late-production XKs, equipped with Le Mans-proven Dunlop disc brakes, were the fastest, safest, and most comfortable sporting cars available in the late 1950s. According to a certificate of authenticity from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, this XK150 S was completed at the factory on November 27, 1958, and dispatched for the US on December 22. Records from the Browns Lane factory archives state the roadster was originally finished in cream with red upholstery and specified with body-colored wire wheels, and completed without a radio, fog lamps, or whitewall tires.
By the late 2000s, the unrestored Jaguar had come into the possession of XK specialist Gary Kakuska of Oswego, Illinois, who had previously restored an early XK120 Alloy for the consignor, a Florida-based marque enthusiast. After selling the car to the consignor, Kakuska was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive restoration to JCNA concours standards. The body was removed for a bare-metal repaint in the original factory color of cream, while the chassis was disassembled and refinished, including a rebuild of the brakes, gearbox, and differential. The interior was properly trimmed in red leather and the instruments were rebuilt. The matching-numbers engine was removed and rebuilt with new forged pistons, stainless steel valves, valve guides, camshafts, and timing chains. The crankshaft was re-ground, the manifolds were refinished in the proper porcelain coating, and the engine was balanced and blueprinted.
The goal of this restoration was to achieve concours standards while also providing driveability in rallies. After work was completed in July 2012, the car attended many JCNA events, culminating in first place at the biennial Challenge Championship in September 2015. The consignor extensively documented the restoration, which he described in several articles in the XK Gazette.
A proven winner in a number of recent JCNA concours and slalom events, this XK150 S presents beautifully and is accompanied by a proper tool kit, jack, and a tonneau cover. The highly authentic restoration has stressed the car’s original appearance, unfettered by side mirrors, fog lamps, an antenna, or even the usual hood mascot. This sensational XK150 S roadster is an exquisite example of a classic Jaguar sports car – one that is worthy of the most discerning collections.
