Masters Historic Racing set for Donington summer sizzler

Masters Historic Racing is set to storm Donington Park this summer (July 2/3) with its annual Historic Festival topped by a superb grid of historic Formula One cars. The third round of the 2016 FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship will bring a interesting grid of cars from the Cosworth DFV era of the 1970s and early ‘80s. Rob Hall, for many years associated with the cars in the Donington Collection, heads the entry in his ex-Jacques Laffite Ligier JS/17 but will face tough opposition from Martin Stretton in Martin Adams’s original Tyrrell 012 from 1983 and the ex-Alan Jones Williams FW07D of Mike Wrigley. There are more examples of the Patrick Head-designed chassis as Christophe D’Ansembourg is behind the wheel of his FW07C, while Simon Fish will be worth watching in his Unipart Ensign N180.The man to beat, though, may well be Belgian Loic Deman, whose Tyrrell 010 was hard to stop at Zolder where the Belgian ace won both races on home soil and displayed great pace at Brands Hatch as well.Another car to watch will be the Ragno-liveried Arrows A4 of Steve Hartley, a race winner in the championship in season’s past. The Burnley battler is always competitive and will be up in the leading gaggle, while the sister car of David Abbott won’t be far adrift, as they emulate 1982 team-mates Mauro Baldi and Marc Surer in the distinctive orange and white cars.In the Pre-78 division for the earlier cars, Max Smith-Hilliard lines up in his Shadow DN5 to take on James Hagan’s ex-James Hunt Hesketh 308 and the March 761 of Thruxton supremo Bill Coombs. Against them comes Jamie Brashaw’s Invitation Class Arrows A1, the 1978 ex-Riccardo Patrese car, and Jason Wright’s Shadow DN8.There is action on the Donington Park Grand Prix circuit on both days of the weekend July 2/3 with race one at 15:15 on Saturday and race two at 15:00 on Sunday. In addition, fans can enjoy an open paddock and great viewing areas.
