The Rover 12 was a name given to several medium-sized family cars between 1905 and 1948 and represented the fourth model Rover made following their 8hp, 6hp and 16hp. It was launched in November 1905 and displayed at that year's Olympia Motor Show. It had a four-cylinder, water-cooled, side-valve, monobloc engine of 1767cc. War then intervened and Rover's Coventry production line was destroyed. They subsequently relocated to Birmingham where they continued to produce cars similar to the 1940 offerings and with a small number, thought to be 200, of sporting tourers made on the Rover 12 chassis by coachbuilders APA Coventry, and only in 1947, making it rare and highly sought-after.

Little is known about this Rover's early history, number 183 of 200. It was purchased by a friend and stored, unused, in a garage for 50 years. Restoration started about 15 years ago and the car has been in running order for the last ten years, although it has been used only very occasionally. The engine was re-bored and new pistons, radiator, fuel tank and many other smaller parts were replaced. The bodywork is original although re-painted. The leather upholstery is original and worn but functional. The car has a 'disappearing' soft hood, not original, that folds down into the boot. The side screens that were originally fitted are no longer useable but are available to be used as patterns for new ones. Deft lines describe this design and the approach is elegant. An unusual alternative to a Derby Bentley?
